The Inspire Sleep Experience

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea and a widespread sleep disorder. According to the National Council on Aging (NCOA), as many as 39 million American adults have some form of OSA, from mild to severe.

While solutions such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy have long been available to address sleep apnea, they aren’t always suitable for all patients. Many people find CPAP uncomfortable, inconvenient, or incompatible with their lifestyle. You may find it a hassle, if not impossible, to sleep with a mask on or while the CPAP machine makes noise. Transporting and repeatedly setting up CPAP equipment while traveling can also be cumbersome.

Fortunately, a new, mask-free treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is now available: the Inspire therapy system. Learn about Inspire, how it differs from other OSA treatments, and how it stacks up compared to alternatives like snoring mouthpieces.

What is Inspire Therapy?

Inspire is a modern medical device designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea symptoms without using a mask and pressurized air equipment, such as a CPAP machine. The Inspire therapy consists of three components: an implant, a remote control, and a mobile app.

  • Inspire implant. The Inspire implant is a type of bionic device implanted under the patient’s skin near the collarbone. The implant is connected to the nerve inside the neck that controls your tongue.

After surgically installing it into the body and turning it on, the implant’s nerve stimulators deliver gentle electric pulses to the tongue each time you take a breath. These pulses keep your airways open, allowing you to breathe normally and eliminate breathing interruptions while sleeping without needing a mask or a hose.

  • Inspire remote. The remote’s primary purpose is to turn the implant’s generator on or off whenever you need it. You can also adjust the intensity of the implant’s pulses from the remote and check the implant’s battery levels. Before you go to sleep, press the button to activate the implant. Press it again to turn it off and resume your daily activities when you wake up.
  • Inspire mobile app. Inspire Medical Systems, the implant developers, recommends using a companion mobile application alongside the implant and remote. It includes additional features like sleep monitoring and tracking, educational resources on OSA, therapy notifications, and direct lines with sleep specialists.

Who Should Consider the Inspire Implant?

The Inspire implant is primarily designed for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea for whom CPAP treatment is either impossible, unhelpful or otherwise unsuitable. Inspire may be suitable for you if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • Age requirement. You must be 18 years or older to undergo Inspire surgery.
  • You must have moderate to severe OSA. Inspire is intended for individuals with a confirmed OSA diagnosis through a sleep study and an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) of 20 to 65. It is not designed to treat Central Sleep Apnea (CSA).
  • CPAP doesn’t work for you. You must have tried treating your OSA with a CPAP machine and determined it was unsuitable or ineffective. For example, if you cannot maintain proper sleep quality while a CPAP machine is running or develop claustrophobia from wearing CPAP masks.
  • You have a suitable BMI. Inspire therapy has been tested and approved for use in people with a body mass index (BMI) of up to 40. However, the higher your BMI, the higher the risk of having excess fatty tissues in the neck, which may interfere with the implant. Consult a healthcare provider for more details.
  • Your airway anatomy is compatible with Inspire. You can undergo an examination of your upper airways to determine your compatibility with the implant. A rare number of individuals may have internal anatomy that would make the Inspire implant ineffective.

Benefits of the Inspire Implant

Inspire is considered an effective and relatively risk-free alternative to CPAP treatment for sleep apnea. If you meet the eligibility criteria for the Inspire implant, you can expect the following potential benefits:

  • High effectiveness rate. According to a 12-month study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), 66% of Inspire patients saw a reduction of AHI events by 50% or more, indicating a strong improvement in breathing quality. 75% of patients on Inspire also experienced a reduction of their Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) of 25% or more. ODI measures how frequently an individual’s blood-oxygen levels fall below normal levels for more than 10 seconds.

Study statistics revealed that the median efficiency per Inspire patient was a 68% reduction in AHI events and a 70% in the ODI score. These scores show Inspire is reliably effective at treating sleep apnea.
  • Healthier life. Proper treatment of OSA through Inspire may reduce the risk of developing medical conditions associated with OSA. These issues include daytime sleepiness, heart diseases like high blood pressure and coronary artery disease (CAD), or heart failure.
  • Trustworthy. Since 2020, Inspire has been the only internal, mask-free OSA treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for all adults in the United States.
  • Maximum comfort. Besides its effectiveness and government approval, the strongest benefit of Inspire for OSA patients is the comfort it brings. Because the system is entirely internal, it eliminates the need to wear an awkward or claustrophobia-inducing CPAP mask. It allows you to fall asleep naturally and without any additional equipment.
  • Discreet and convenient. Once surgically implanted under your skin, the Inspire implant is not visible or uncomfortable. It lets you sleep in any position and wear any clothing you want.

Potential Drawbacks of the Inspire Implant

While Inspire therapy can benefit OSA patients, it carries certain risks and drawbacks that may make it unsuitable for you. The main disadvantages of Inspire include:

  • It is a surgical procedure. All surgical procedures carry a degree of risk, including infections, complications, scars failing to heal correctly, and other side effects.
  • You cannot recharge the device’s battery. While the Inspire implant is designed to last for approximately 11 years, it is non-rechargeable, and you cannot replace it yourself. You must undergo another surgery to replace the battery unit with a new one.
  • It is a costly solution. The NCOA estimates the Inspire system costs approximately $30,000 to $40,000, making it one of the most expensive sleep apnea treatments. Additionally, insurance coverage may vary widely, and your plan is not guaranteed to cover the device fully. Contact your insurance provider for more information.

Snoring Mouthpieces: An Alternative OSA Treatment to Consider

A snoring mouthpiece, also known as a mandibular advancement device (MDA), is an oral appliance designed to treat loud snoring and OSA. If CPAP machines aren’t for you, here are the main reasons to consider snoring mouthpieces such as the SnoreRx and SnoreRx Plus to treat sleep apnea.

  • Easy to use and non-invasive. Unlike Inspire, which requires surgery, or CPAP machines, which require an electrically powered mask, a snoring mouthpiece is a purely mechanical device. You can simply wear it like a mouthguard before going to sleep.
  • Custom and semi-custom options. Over-the-counter (OTC) mouthpieces often feature adjustable elements and mechanisms such as boil-and-bite to improve their fit to your teeth and jaw. Some models can even be 100% custom-fitted to your mouth’s exact dimensions, maximizing comfort. However, they are typically only available by prescription.

For example, the SnoreRx is an OTC boil-and-bite model using an advanced design and materials. It is intended to offer as close to a 100% custom fit as possible without the need for a prescription-only model.
  • Portable. Snoring mouthpieces are small, lightweight, and easy to transport. They are an excellent fit for people with active lifestyles or travel frequently.
  • Low-maintenance. Most snoring mouthpieces can be cleaned with little more than your toothbrush and toothpaste. Some models can even be disassembled for deeper cleaning, extending their lifespan. For example, the SnoreRx is designed to be disassembled without tools, making cleaning and maintenance almost effortless.
  • May be a better solution. Depending on the type and severity of your OSA case, a snoring mouthpiece like SnoreRx can offer a more cost-effective solution than the Inspire implant or CPAP machine, potentially making it the best treatment for you.

Retake Control of Your Sleep Quality

While the Inspire implant may be a highly effective solution for treating obstructive sleep apnea without relying on a CPAP machine, the high costs and surgical requirements can make it unappealing or unattainable for the average person.

Other solutions, such as snoring mouthpieces, can provide the relief you need to improve breathing and sleeping quality without breaking the bank. Joe Rogan Snoring Mouthpiece

If you follow mixed martial arts or regularly listen to podcasts, you may be familiar with Joe Rogan. Rogan is best known for hosting the award-winning Joe Rogan Experience podcast, his work as a UFC commentator, and his past as an actor and comedian. However, he is also a long-time advocate of personal wellness and fitness routines, ranging from diet and exercise to mental health, supplements, and sleep quality.

Rogan has been vocal about his experience with sleep apnea on his podcast, talking about the importance of visiting a doctor, getting the condition diagnosed, and taking the proper steps to address it. His experience with sleep apnea and his commitment to raising awareness have prompted him to use a snoring mouthpiece to improve his sleep quality.

If you experience problems with snoring and breathing while sleeping, consider using a quality snoring mouthpiece to manage the issue, just as Joe Rogan did. Modern mouthpiece designs, such as the SnoreRx and SnoreRx Plus, may improve your sleep quality and prevent the dangerous health risks associated with sleep apnea without resorting to costlier and more invasive solutions.

What are Snoring and Sleep Apnea?

Snoring is the result of partially obstructed breathing while sleeping. Many conditions cause people to snore, from the common cold to the natural anatomy of the mouth and throat. While it can be a nuisance, it isn’t necessarily an indicator of health issues.

Regular snoring should not be confused with snoring caused by sleep apnea. One of the symptoms of sleep apnea is characterized by pauses or shallow breathing, which can resemble severe or noisy snoring. This phenomenon is typically caused by an obstruction of the airways known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Frequent breathing interruptions caused by OSA don’t just reduce sleep quality; they also limit your oxygen supply, causing a long list of potentially severe health problems, including:

  • High blood pressure. OSA can cause you to wake up suddenly and catch your breath frequently during the night. It stresses your body, elevates your blood pressure, and increases your risk of heart disease.
  • Diabetes. Studies suggest that people with OSA are more at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, regardless of age or body weight.
  • Liver problems. Research has uncovered a link between OSA and certain liver diseases. For instance, OSA can create or exacerbate the risk of developing liver diseases such as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
  • Chronic daytime fatigue. Repeated sleep interruptions caused by sleep apnea can cause daytime drowsiness, fatigue, irritability, and reduced concentration.

If you suffer from one or multiple symptoms, take a cue from Joe Rogan and seek a professional diagnosis as soon as possible. Don’t wait until minor problems turn into major, life-threatening issues, and listen to the signals your body is sending.

Joe Rogan’s Experience with Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Joe Rogan has repeatedly brought up snoring and sleep apnea with guests on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. UFC fighters and commentators like Rogan understand the importance of being in peak physical and mental condition and how sleep apnea can impact both in anyone, including athletes.

Like many people with OSA, Rogan experienced the most common symptoms at first: breathing interruptions, heavy snoring, daytime fatigue, and issues concentrating. He researched potential treatment options, including traditional solutions like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines, as discussed with Chris Ryan in Episode 1369

However, while the CPAP machine initially provided some relief in his battle with sleep apnea, he did not find it to be the ideal solution for him. The UFC commentator described it as uncomfortable with guest scientist Dr. Rhonda Patrick in Episode 1474.

After meeting with dentist and inventor Dr. Bryan Keropian, who specializes in researching sleep disorders, Rogan eventually adopted and advocated for the use of a customized snoring mouthpiece. This device allowed him to better understand his sleep apnea and treat its underlying conditions while being more comfortable and convenient than a traditional CPAP machine.

The Role of a Snoring Mouthpiece

A snoring mouthpiece, also known as a snoring mouthguard or a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD), is an oral device designed to treat the symptoms of snoring. It is also a potential alternative to a CPAP machine to address sleep apnea for people with mild and moderate OSA.

At first glance, snoring mouthpieces resemble the protective mouthguards worn by UFC fighters. They work by adjusting the position of the lower jaw and keeping the tongue from falling backward. This mechanism prevents the airways from closing and minimizes the risk of snoring or breathing problems.

Wearing a snoring mouthpiece has many potential benefits:

  • Improves sleep quality. As Joe Rogan described multiple times on his podcast, the mouthpiece is an effective tool for good-quality sleep. It can help prevent the fatigue and concentration loss associated with sleep apnea, keeping the mind and body sharp.
  • Convenient. Snoring mouthpieces are portable and lightweight, making them easy to travel with. Rogan described the convenience of having a mouthguard on his trips, ensuring he gets good-quality sleep anywhere he goes.
  • Non-invasive. A snoring mouthpiece can alleviate sleep apnea symptoms without the invasiveness of more complex solutions, such as CPAP machines or surgery. It also has minimal side effects and requires no medication to use.

If you’re considering trying a snoring mouthpiece for your sleep apnea, here are some challenges and possible issues you should be aware of:

  • Adjustment period. When you first start using a snoring mouthpiece, it’s common to feel a bit uncomfortable, particularly in the initial days. You might find yourself salivating more than usual or feeling some soreness in your jaw. These reactions are typical and should lessen as you get used to the device.
  • Fit considerations. Many snoring mouthpieces are semi-custom or semi-adjustable, allowing for personal adjustments to improve fit in your mouth. However, if you continue to face problems or discomfort with a semi-custom device, it might be time to consult a dental professional for a mouthpiece that is custom-fitted specifically for you.
  • Not for everyone. Snoring mouthpieces are primarily effective for treating mild and moderate cases of sleep apnea. It may not be suitable to treat more severe forms of OSA or Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), which is caused by cerebral and central nervous system issues.

Top Recommended Snoring Mouthpieces

Even if you know a mouthpiece is the right solution to treat snoring or sleep apnea, finding the right model for your needs can be challenging. Speak with your dentist or healthcare provider before using any specific model to ensure it fits you correctly.

Here are some of the best models currently available:

Best Overall: SnoreRx Plus

The SnoreRx Plus is an improved version of the original SnoreRx design. The semi-custom “boil and fit” mechanism allows you to personalize your SnoreRx Plus to your teeth and jawline. Simply place your mouthpiece in a cup of boiling water, wait 60 seconds, then wear it and bite down firmly. Your SnoreRx Plus will adjust to the exact shape of your dental impression for a perfect fit.

The newer SnoreRx Plus retains its predecessor’s distinctive transparent shell, thermal matrix design, and millimeter-adjustable mechanism. New features introduced by the Plus model include support for vertical jaw movement, a re-designed hinge that accounts for natural jaw movement, and easy disassembly for cleaning and hygiene.

Pros:

  • Improved comfort level. The SnoreRx Plus’s design, materials, and hinge systems are designed to provide a degree of comfort and freedom of jaw movement unmatched by other models on the market.
  • Fully adjustable. You can adjust your SnoreRx Plus with up to six millimeters of lateral deviation between the upper and lower pieces, letting you find the most comfortable position for your jaw and teeth.
  • Easy to maintain. The SnoreRx Plus requires no tools to disassemble, giving you easy access to its parts for cleaning. You can use your regular toothbrush and toothpaste for daily spot cleaning and plaque removal.

Cons:

  • Pricier than the original. Although the SnoreRx Plus comes with a wider and more comfortable range of features than the original SnoreRx, it is priced about $40 higher.
  • Short trial period. The manufacturer offers a 30-night money-back guarantee on all SnoreRx Plus models, slightly shorter than the plans offered by other products.

Best Value: ZQuiet

If you need to manage sleep apnea on a budget or aren’t sure whether snoring mouthpieces are for you, ZQuiet may be the right solution for you. The ZQuiet Anti-Snoring Mouthpieces are sold in a two-pack containing two differently-sized models. Both feature a thin, curved profile and a hinged design. They are ready to be used out of the box, making them one of the simplest mouthpiece devices available on the market.

Pros:

  • Thin and lightweight. The ZQuiet’s relatively simple product design and hinge system makes it easier to use and breathe through, requiring less effort to bite down and keep in place than other models.
  • Two devices in one. When purchasing a ZQuiet, you will find two mouthpieces in the box: one with a 2-millimeter jaw adjustment and another with a 6-millimeter one. Use the model that feels most comfortable for you.
  • Inexpensive. The ZQuiet mouthpiece pack not only has a lower upfront cost than most other models, but you also get two devices for the price of one.

Cons:

  • No customization. ZQuiet mouthpieces have no adjustable features. If neither of the two mouthpieces in the box fits you comfortably, it may leave you without a suitable or fitting option.
  • Durability issues. The ZQuiet is not designed to be cleaned and maintained. Instead, you need to replace it every 3 to 6 months, which can be costly over time.

Best Customization: SleepTight

If you need an anti-snoring mouthpiece that you can fit perfectly to your mouth and teeth from the first use, look no further than the SleepTight. This mouthpiece is a high-quality, medical-grade mandibular advancement device designed to provide the highest level of comfort.

Pros:

  • Durable custom fit. Every element of the SleepTight is designed to fit the exact shape of your teeth and jaw. Its boil-and-bite system and dual laminate construction are designed to retain your mouth’s shape without tearing, giving it a long service life.
  • Multipurpose air hole. The SleepTight features a wide air hole, approximately 0.90” wide and 0.25” tall. It is not only easy to breathe through, but it can also accommodate a separate tongue-retaining device to help you combat sleep apnea more effectively.
  • 100% BPA and latex-free. The SleepTight is manufactured entirely using medical-grade materials. It uses no bisphenol A (BPA) or latex in its construction, which can trigger allergies in some patients.

Cons:

  • Available by prescription only. Unlike other mouthpiece products on the market, the SleepTight RX is not an over-the-counter device. Instead, it is a prescription-only device that a medical professional must recommend for you.
  • Refitting may be challenging. While the SleepTight can be re-molded and reshaped to fit a different dental profile, it can be challenging and require multiple tries.

Stop Snoring and Sleep Soundly

When Joe Rogan met a fellow on a plane trip and realized that he, too, seemed to suffer from sleep apnea, he offered two suggestions: speak with a doctor and ask about snoring mouthpieces. If you struggle with snoring or suspect you might have sleep apnea, follow the same suggestion and look for a high-quality snoring mouthpiece.

These devices may be able to give you back the sleep quality you need, improve your physical and mental health, and regain the alertness and concentration lost to breathing issues. Once you are ready, explore SnoringMouthpieceGuide.com to learn about the best and highest-reviewed snoring mouthpiece devices on the market and find the one you need.

My Experience Using The AVEOtsd

My AVEOtsd was shipped via New Zeland Post from Dunedin, New Zealand and arrived in Los Angeles, California one day later. From there, it took an additional 9 days to clear customs and for USPS to deliver the package to my mailbox on the east coast.

The total transit time was 10 days from the warehouse to my doorstep. Those on the west coast will likely experience faster shipping times.

Upon opening the poly mailer, I noticed that the retail box was a little beat up from the 9000-mile journey that it took to arrive at my home. Luckily, the contents of the package were still intact which included the mouthpiece, a storage case as well as detailed instructions.

Appearance

The AVEO is transparent and is made from a silicone material that’s very soft to the touch. The flange (the portion that goes inside of your mouth) material measures 0.60 mm in thickness and is much thinner in comparison to the blub that rests outside of the mouth.

As for overall dimensions, it measures 44 mm wide by 56 mm long.

Smell

The first order of business was to address the concerns of smell. I noticed a commenter on another website that said that the AVEO smelled terrible. After giving it a good smell, I would have to disagree. The AVEO does not have an offensive odor at all.

Unfortunately, AVEO has seen its fair share of counterfeit products over the years. Counterfeiters create a replica of an authentic AVEO using inferior materials which produce off-gassing that can be a risk to your health. The smell produced by off-gassing is strong and is often described as very unpleasant.

It’s likely that the person who wrote this comment received a counterfeit product. My AVEO came directly from the manufacturer and smelled just fine.

Fitting the AVEO

As mentioned in the instructions, I gave my AVEO a good rinse under hot water before putting it to use.

The mouthpiece is held in place by suction that’s created by squeezing the air out of the bulb, placing it on the tongue and releasing the bulb which creates negative pressure and draws the tongue into the bulb.

It took a couple of attempts to adjust the mouthpiece to the ideal level of suction. At first, I created too much of a vacuum which caused my frenulum to becomes sore after a few minutes.

I removed the mouthpiece and did not squeeze as hard when placing it back on my tongue. This time, it was much more comfortable. The key is to find a balance between creating enough suction to hold the mouthpiece in place while not creating too much where it causes discomfort.

Putting It To The Test

Once I got the hang of how the mouthpiece fit, I was ready to put it to the test.

Before going to bed, I fit the mouthpiece just as I had practiced earlier in the day. I have used a tongue stabilizing device many times before, so the AVEO was not at all unfamiliar.

Most who try out a TSD for the first time will notice excessive salivation. Initially, this was an issue for me as well.

Despite having used one before, the next morning I woke up laying next to drool-soaked pillow which was pretty gross. The mouthpiece, however, was still attached to my tongue.

After removing the AVEO, I noticed some tongue soreness but nothing to be concerned about as it went away within an hour.

I asked my wife if the mouthpiece resolved my snoring and she said that I slept silently throughout the night which meant that she was also able to get some sleep as well.

When testing a mouthpiece, I like to try it out for several days to ensure that there are no issues.

I continued using the AVEO for the remainder of the week to ensure that there were no issues with it. I would rinse it off each morning under hot water and allow it to air dry.

Night after night it delivered consistent results. The drooling and tongue soreness had subsided by the third night and it was smooth sailing from there.

My snoring had stopped and I work up feeling great every morning.

Success.

What Is The AVEOtsd?

The name AVEOtsd is derived from the Latin word Aveo, meaning “be well” or “fare” and TSD which is an acronym for Tongue Stabilizing Device.

The AVEOtsd is a pacifier-like mouthpiece that’s made of medical grade silicone and attaches to the end of the tongue and is designed to hold the tongue forward while asleep in order to prevent snoring.

The mouthpiece was created and patented by Dr. Christopher John Robertson, a specialist in dental sleep medicine and researcher at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zeland.

In 1999, Great Lakes Orthodontics sent a 510 (k) premarket notification (# K993381) to the US government and received a statement from the Department of Health & Human Resources, giving them the green light to sell the Aveo.

You’re probably wondering how such a small product can have such a large impact on snoring.

In order to better understand how the Aveo works, you should first take a look at the anatomy of the airway.

Why Snoring Occurs And How The AVEO Works

Despite what many believe, most snoring actually originates within the airway. During our waking hours, the tongue remains in the forward position which makes room for air to travel freely in and out of the airway.

While asleep, the jaw and tongue relax and fall towards the airway, due in part to the effects of gravity. The airway can become quite narrow and in some cases closes completely. When this occurs, breathing momentarily stops and this is referred to as an apneic event.

A narrow airway creates resistance as air rushes past. The movement of air past a restricted opening will cause tissues to collide with each other, creating the sound that we know as snoring.

The obvious solution is to fit a device that holds the tongue in place which is exactly what the Aveo does. But how effective is it?

The Aveo has been the subject of at least four different scientific studies between 2002 and 2011.

One study 2009 study suggests that the Aveo effectively treated 60% of those with mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) while Another study showed a 77% decrease in Apnea-Hypopnea Index when using the AVEOtsd.

Cost And Shipping

There was a time when the only way to purchase the AVEOtsd was through a dentist who would write a prescription and charge you hundreds of dollars.

Times have changed and now that the AVEO is being sold direct to consumer, the price has been driven down by competitors who sell similar products.

The AVEOtsd comes in both a single pack as well as a twin pack.

The single pack sells for $89.00 while the twin pack sells for $139.00.

Free air shipping from New Zealand is included.

Because they do eventually wear out, you may want to consider buying the twin pack which will save you some money in the long run.

Keeping an extra one in your vehicle is also a good idea in the event that you stay the night somewhere other than home and forget to bring your mouthpiece.

Will it help with my sleep apnea?

cpap machine and mask for sleep apenaThose with obstructive sleep apnea are typically issued a CPAP machine and often feel tied to their machine, taking it everywhere they go and are constantly searching for an electrical outlet.

Many sleep apnea suffers have successfully substituted their CPAP machines with a simple tongue stabilizing device such as the AVEO. While this is possible, it is advisable to first speak with your doctor in order to determine if this product is a potential substitute. Your doctor may have you conduct a sleep study with the device in order to determine its effectiveness.

What Makes The AVEO Different?

AVEOtsd Vs The Mandibular Advancement Splint

Unless you are just now hearing about snoring mouthpieces, you have probably heard of Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). A number of different prescription MAD’s, as well as over-the-counter mouthpieces, exist today. Some popular names include Zyppah, ZQuiet, VitalSleep, and SnoreRX.

Unlike the TSD which hold the tongue forward, the MAD fit between the upper and lower teeth, similar to a sports mouthguard and holds the jaw forward in order to tighten the airway and prevent snoring.

Both types of oral appliances are proven to reduce or eliminate snoring, however, one of the side effects of MAD use is teeth shifting as well as misalignment after prolong use.

Since the AVEO doesn’t depend on the use of teeth for leverage, there are no known dental issues associated with the using the AVEO.

AVEOtds Vs Good Morning Snore Solution (GMSS)

The GMSS is a popular TSD that was introduced in 2007 by the Canadian based company MpowRx. While Aveo was the first to patent and sell their product to physicians, MpowRx was able to sell their product directly to consumers eleven years before AVEO.

While they may look a little different, both products function the same.

The main difference between the two has to do with the flange design. The AVEO has a long flange that covers and protects the tongue from biting. If you tend to grind your teeth at night, the AVEO would offer more protection against damaging your tongue.

There is a slight price difference between the two. The GMSS sells for $99.94 while the AVEO sells for $89.00 Both prices include free shipping.

AVEOtsd Vs ZenGuard

ZenGuard resembles the AVEOtsd so closely, you just may ask yourself if they are sold by the same company. The answer is no.

AVEO has been around since the late 90’s while Zenguard recently entered the scene in 2017.

There are a few differences between the two.

We know that the AVEO is made from Dow Corning medical grade silicone while there’s little transparency when it comes to the type of silicone used in the ZenGuard or where it’s made.

Zenguard states that their product is made in an “FDA Approved Facility”. Such facilities do not exist. Manufacturers and distributors of medical devices are required to register their establishment with the FDA each year. The FDA never “approves” a facility.

AVEOtsd has been cleared by the FDA and TGA in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zeland and in the US.

As for price, the AVEO sells for $89.00 while Zenguard sells for $97.00. Both prices include free shipping.

Counterfeit / Fake AVEOtsd

AVEOtsd mentions that counterfeit products are circulating at a much lower price than the authentic AVEOtsd. These fakes go as far as copying the packaging that the mouthpiece comes in.

Lookalikes appear on eBay and Amazon when you type in the term “AVEOtsd”. While they are sold under different private label names, they all come from the same Chinese factory and cost as little as sixty cents each.

Is there really a difference? Why not buy the knockoff and save a lot of money?

The real difference has to do with the material that’s used to make to make the mouthpiece and the quality controls that are in place.

AVEO uses Dow Corning medical grade silicone. While the counterfeits are often said to be made from silicone, the exact composition of the silicone is unknown. This opens the door for potentially harmful chemicals to leach into your mouth when worn. Personally, I wouldn’t risk it.

Cleaning and Maintaining the AVEOtsd

In a clinical setting, the AVEO can be sterilized using a cold sterilant or autoclave.

At home, you should rinse the mouthpiece under hot water each morning and allow to air dry.

Use a denture cleaning solution once a week to kill off germ and bacterial growth.  Do not clean with alcohol-based cleaners such as mouthwash as it will react with the silicone and damage the mouthpiece.

Should I buy it?

Man holding up sign with question marks written on itThe most important question that you should ask yourself before buying is whether or not you can easily breathe through your nose while sleeping. If the answer is “no” or “occasionally” then you may want to consider an alternative product as the Aveo does not allow for oral breathing.

If nasal breathing is not an issue then buying the Aveo may be one of the best decisions you ever made. Sure its simply a piece of formed silicone that likely cost very little to manufacture but keep in mind that countless hours of research, product development and marketing adds to the cost.

Final Thoughts

The AVEOtsd has been around for nearly 20 years but is just now being offered directly to consumers without the need for a prescription.

While testing this mouthpiece, I found it to be both very effective and comfortable once properly adjusted. After finding the sweet spot, you and your partner will be able to enjoy many nights of snore-less sleep. You will wake up feeling rested and ready to conquer the day.

The AVEO works similarly to other TSD while offering the added benefit of a long sleeve which protects the tongue from damage from the teeth.

This mouthpiece is competitively priced and gets the job done without side effects such as shifting teeth.

Overall, this is an excellent product that is well worth giving a try if you don’t like the idea of using a sports guard style mouthguard or simply want to try something different.

Don’t let the seemingly high cost sway your decision. If it stops your snoring problem then it is worth its weight in gold.

Review of VitalSleep snoring solution – Is it really worth the money?

4.5 Star Rating

About Vitalsleep

The sleep aid industry is growing by leaps and bounds each year as an increasing number of adults are being overworked and getting less than the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night.

There are millions of others who receive the recommended amount of sleep each night and still wake up feeling groggy and tired.

While there may be several reasons why so many are waking up tired, you may be surprised to hear that snoring is a common cause of poor sleep quality.

Numerous products have popped up on the market in recent years, promising the best night sleep you ever had. The VitalSleep snoring mouthpiece happens to be one of these products.

VitalSleep was cleared by the FDA (510(k) Number K092942) in January 2010 and is classified as a class II anti-snoring device. It is a mandibular advancement device that has a lower tray adjustment which can be tweaked using the provided hex tool. It’s made in the USA and is guaranteed to be latex and BPA free.

It features the common “boil and bite” technology which provides more of a custom fit, contouring the unique ridges of one’s teeth. Also, it enables breathing through the mouth due to the air hole located at the front of the device.

Like all other MAD’s, this product works by holding your jaw in the advanced position, pulling forward the tongue, airway and various muscles. As a result, the airway is cleared from obstructions and the sound of snoring ceases.

The Vitalsleep mouthpiece was co-developed by The Snore Reliever Company LLC. which is based out of New York, NY. The company was registered in December 2010 but the device did not gain much momentum until just over a year later in January 2012.

VitalSleep was created with the help of a doctor who has over 25 years of experience in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The inventor came up with the idea to create a low-cost anti-snore device after spending nearly $3,000 on a dentist prescribed oral appliance that broke after a few short days of use.

New And Improved Design

Vitalsleep’s original design was used between 2010 and 2018. In 2018, a new and improved version was released which drastically improved the fit of the mouthpiece. The new design is also more durable which means that it will last longer.

Unlike its opaque predecessor, the new Vitalsleep is solid white with a blue accent color and has a lower profile.

The new VitalSleep sports a rigid frame with a soft plastic lining that can be heated to create a deep custom impression of your teeth. This was not possible with the original version.

Price and Shipping

Price tag with magnifying glass over the word price

VitalSleep costs $69.95 which includes Free US as well as international shipping.

You can purchase a second mouthpiece for the discounted price of $39.00 with free shipping as well. Keep one as a backup or give it to your snoring partner or to someone else as a gift.

Transit time is typically between five to ten days, although it often arrives sooner.

All orders ship the same business day if placed before 3 PM eastern time.

You will receive a shipping confirmation with a tracking number once your order ships.

Something else to keep in mind is that Vitalsleep offers free replacements for one full year.

Available In Two Sizes

One thing unique about the VitalSleep is that it’s available in both regular and the small sizes. The small is a scaled-down version of the regular and is 90% it’s size.

Most snoring mouthpiece manufacturers only offer one size, so having a mouthpiece for those with a smaller mouth is a nice feature since some mouths will be smaller than others.

My Experience Using the VitalSleep

I received my VitalSleep in the mail and read over the instructions. Creating a custom impression only took a few minutes and afterward I used the provided hex tool to adjust the lower tray. Here’s are the steps that I followed during the initial fitting process.

  1. Ensure that the upper and lower trays are both adjusted directly on top of each other. If not, use the adjustment tool to move the lower tray in or out. There is an indicator mark on each side of the device. Makes sure that the indicator mark is located all the way forward.
  2. Bring a pot of water to a slow boil and submerge the mouthpiece using a pair of tongs. Allow the mouthpiece to sit in the boiling water for 90 seconds. This will make the plastic lining pliable.
  3. Remove from the water and dip into a mug of cold water for 3 seconds.
  4. Locate the triangle stamped on the inside of the mouthguard. This indicated the upper tray. Place the device in your mouth with the correct side up and bite down gently. Hold this position for 30 seconds.
  5. Remove from your mouth and place back into the cold water for 30 seconds. to cool it.
  6. Check to ensure a good fit. Repeat if necessary to achieve a deep impression.

The entire process was really easy and only took a few minutes. I was able to achieve a great fit on my first attempt.

The 7-Night Trial

Having owned both the original Vitalsleep as well as the improved version, I have to admit that the newer design fits much better and is more comfortable to wear than its predecessor. The newer one, however, offers a much closer, tighter fit.

After fitting, I put the mouthpiece in and I was off to bed.

The following morning I asked my wife if she noticed if I had snored any throughout the night. She noted that although it didn’t completely eliminate my snoring, it greatly reduced it.

Using the provided tool, I tightened down each side evenly 2.5 revolutions on each side in order to advance the lower tray. The theory is that doing so will hold the jaw forward which helps to clear the airway.

The following night, I had my wife observe my snoring habits once again. This time my snoring had completely stopped.

I continued to wear the Vitalsleep for the next five night to ensure that I did not experience any issues with the mouthpiece, which I didn’t.

The Vitalsleep worked and it worked well. It fits nicely and functioned as intended.

What Are The Other Reviewers Saying?

Animation of three people talking

As with most MAD’s, some users have reported jaw soreness during the first few nights of use as well as occasional drooling.

Aside from these two issues, most reviewers agree that they experienced a complete night of uninterrupted sleep, more energy, and absolutely no snoring the entire night.

I was unable to find any complaints of long-term discomfort anywhere online.  Those who have tried the improved version of the Vitalsleep mostly agree that it offers a close, tight fit.

I found a few who claimed that the unit can be difficult to clean due to all the nooks and crannies in between the two trays.  On average, most reviews are coming from people who have purchased and used the product for several months.

Clinical Studies And VitalSleep

While the Vitalsleep has not been clinically tested, similar devices have and the results indicate that such devices are effective at treating moderate to severe cases of snoring.

There are numerous documented studies such as this one conducted by the Department of Thoracic Medicine at Middlesex Hospital in the UK.

The study concluded that 80 out of 94 (85%) of patients who completed the study had shown improvements in snoring. While the study did not use the Vitalsleep, the oral appliance that they used functions exactly the same.

Keep in mind that the most anti-snoring mouthpieces that are available on the market today were not tested using a clinical study. These types of studies can be very expensive and time-consuming. Because of this, manufacturers often rely on studies that were previously conducted using similar mouthpieces.

My Overall Thoughts

Overall, I was really impressed with the VitalSleep. It is without a doubt one of the best-engineered mouthpieces out there. It allows you to breathe freely, is comfortable and adjustable, and most importantly it works!

The VitalSleep packs a hard punch, offering features that are superior to most over-the-counter mouthguards in its class.

Having the ability to be customized and adjusted the mouthpiece allows for a more comfortable fit.

It also features breathing holes which are needed for those with sinus issues because it gives them the ability to breathe through their mouth while sleeping.

It’s priced competitively and is one of the least expensive adjustable MAD’s available on the market today.

Vitalsleep offers a 60-day money back guarantee free replacements for one full year, for any reason.

The VitalSleep hit the nail on the head when it comes to design, price, comfort, and functionality and because of this, I can give it my recommendation.

Marpac DOHM Classic White Noise Machine Review – Is It Really Worth It?

I receive free products and participate in affiliate programs where I may receive a commission, at no cost to you, if you visit a merchant’s site and make a purchase using links from within this page.

About Marpac

In 1962, Jim Buckwalter created a white noise machine to help his wife who suffered from insomnia.

The idea originated when Jim noticed that his wife, Trudy, seemed to sleep better while traveling and staying the night in a hotel room. After giving it some thought, the couple theorized that the soothing sound of the hotel air conditioner was the reason behind Trudy’s improvement in sleep.

After realizing this, Jim decided to build a machine that replicated the sound produced by the hotel air conditioner. Working in his garage using a few components such as a motorized fan and bowl, he created what would later become the very first white noise machine.

Soon enough, friends and family began asking Jim if he could build a white noise generator for them as well. As you may have guessed, this eventually evolved into the creation of Marpac.

The sound conditioner that is sold by Marpac today operates using the same basic design as years past with a few minor changes to its appearance.

The Dohm Classic M1DSUSWH

Today, Marpac offers four different types of sound machines including natural sound, multi-sound, baby, and travel. There are a total of eight different models to choose from.

I had the opportunity to review one of their most popular models, the DOHM Classic, which is part of their natural sound machine collection.

The DOHM classic is available in three different colors including black, white, and tan.

This compact unit measures only 5.8″ around by 3.2″ tall which takes up very little space.

The unit plugs into a standard US 120v wall outlet and uses just 18 watts of power which is about the equivalent of one LED light bulb.

Each unit is made in the U.S. in Wilmington, NC and is signed by the factory worker who assembled it.

The Dohm comes with a one-year factory warranty which covers parts and workmanship.

What’s Inside?

Your curiosity might have you wondering exactly what’s inside the Dohm. I removed the cover to take a peek. Please note, opening the unit will void your warranty and puts you at risk for injury or death. Do not attempt this at home.

As suspected, there’s really not much to this unit. A power cord runs to a switch and then to a motor which has a metal fan attached to it. The fan blades are folded down at a sharp angle which draws air in from the top and forces it downward. The motor inside seems to be of good quality.

Because of the simple design, there are fewer parts that can break which means you should be able to enjoy it for many years before having to replace it.

Controlling the DOHM Classic

A toggle switch allows you to adjust the fan speed between “Off” “High” and “Low”. The sound of white noise is generated by a fan that’s controlled by this switch. The high-low settings allow you to adjust the noise level or volume of the unit by increasing the speed of the fan.

Once turned on, the slide adjustments allow you to tune the machine to achieve the desired level of sound.

As you turn the shell clockwise, the opening in which air flows becomes smaller and the sound becomes more muffled. Turning the top of the machine creates a similar effect, although the change in sound is not nearly as dramatic.

This unit is capable of generating a range of sound between 50 – 75 decibels, which is the equivalent of moderate rainfall to traffic noise.

The Dohm did not arrive with any instruction aside from “plug it in”, “turn it on”, and “adjust your sound”. Honestly, this is a very simple device, so further instruction is not necessary.

I adjusted the side holes to my liking and then fine-tuned top holes. It took a few attempts to find a sound that was soothing yet not distracting.

In The Office

I started off by testing the Dohm in my office where the sound of traffic coming from outside can be quite distracting at times.

I placed the unit next to my office window and turned it on low. I quickly realized that the sound being generated was not quite enough to drown out the traffic noise, so I turned it up to high. At this point, the sound was a bit too loud, so I dialed the machine down a bit to muffle the sound until it reached a balance where I could no longer hear the passing traffic and the white noise was not overly loud.

The gentle whispers of the Dohm allowed me to work for hours without the distractions from outside noise. It also helped to eliminate noise from outside my office door. I found that placing it next to the door is a great way to keep a conversation private from those who pass by.

In The Bedroom

While having too much noise can be an issue, a room that’s too quiet can be difficult to sleep in. The sound of silence can make falling asleep a challenge and the slightest noise can be startling.

I usually sleep with the fan running, which generates enough noise to allow me to fall asleep. One of the issues with running the fan is that depending on the temperature of my room, I don’t always want the fan blowing on me. The Dohm is the perfect solution for this issue because it allows me to enjoy the sound of air movement but without actually feeling it. As a bonus, it uses less energy than a ceiling fan.

My bedroom is generally very quiet, with the exception of my snoring, which I hear can be very loud at times (more on this in just a second).

I placed the Dohm on my dresser and turned it on low and then adjusted the sound to create a low soothing whisper. I was amazed at how the sound filled the room even with it turned to low.

Once I was settled into bed, it wasn’t long before I was sound asleep. Not only did I fall asleep quickly, I stayed asleep throughout the night which is uncommon.

Dohm Vs My Snoring

If you are a regular reader of Snoringmouthpieceguide.com, you know that I have a snoring problem. In fact, my snoring actually inspired me to create this blog in a quest to find the perfect snoring mouthpiece. These retainer-like devices can actually completely silence the sound of snoring by addressing the root cause.

In the past, I’ve written about using white noise to neutralize the sound of snoring and have heard from many people who have experienced success using white noise to silence their partner’s snoring. This, however, was my first attempt at using a sound generating machine to combat my snoring.

I positioned the machine on my nightstand and turned it on low before going to bed. I left it up to my wife to adjust the Dohm once I fell asleep.

As expected, the low setting was no match for my loud snoring, so my wife eventually turned the machine up to high and opened the air holes nearly all the way. With the machine cranked up and humming away, the Dohm overcame the sound of my snoring and she was able to fall asleep.

The next day, my wife placed the Dohm on her side of the bed and placed a pillow between us which helped to reduce the noise traveling over to her side of the bed. By doing so, she was able to lower the fan from high to low and still fall asleep without being disturbed by my snoring. The Dohm was a success.

How Much Does It Cost?

The Dohm Classic varies in cost, depending on which retailer you purchase it from. Bed Bath & Beyond and Target currently sell the machine for $49.99 while Walmart sells it for slightly less.

As for the best price, I found that purchasing from the Marpac website is the way to go. They currently sell the Dohm Classic (M1DSUSWH) for $44.95 which includes free FedEx shipping within the United States. Plus, when you purchase directly from Marpac, you can take advantage of their 101-night Trial which allows you to test out the Dohm for 101 nights and return it for a refund if not satisfied. Dohm Uno Vs Dohm Classic Vs Dohm

Marpac sells three natural sound machines – The Dohm, Dohm Classic, and the Dohm Uno. While the three are similar in appearance, there are subtle differences between each.

The Dohm classic is the original version of the sound machine which has been sold for over 50 years. In 2017, Marpac decided to give their sound machine a facelift. In doing so, they changed the name of the original version to Dohm Classic while calling the new version the Dohm.

While the two are identical in function, there are a couple of differences between the Dohm and the Dohm Classic.

First, the overall textured design of the Dohm is a bit sleeker and more modern. While the Dohm Classic comes in the colors black, white, and tan, the Dohm comes in white with several accent colors as well as charcoal.  Aside from the appearance, the newer version costs $5.00 more.

I speculate that MarPac is phasing out the classic version and moving towards replacing it with the newer one, so if you are interested in the classic, right now is a great time to pick one up.

The Dohm Uno is slightly larger than the classic and features an on/off button with no option for high or low, which will limit your ability to control the sound level. The Uno is only available in white and costs $15 less than the Classic Dohm.

Final Thoughts

Although there are plenty of white noise machines to choose from, the Dohm Classic is the oldest and most popular machine out there and for good reason.

While other sound machines offer more features than one could ever use, the Dohm provides soothing white noise using a 2-speed fan in lieu of speakers. Because of its mechanical working, it provides smooth, continuous sound without any noticeable loop that can be heard.

The simplicity of the machine and the purity of the sound that’s produced are likely two reasons why the Dohm has been around for so many years.

Before trying the Dohm Classic, I never realized just how useful a white noise machine could be. Now that I own one it’s hard to imagine living without it!

These days, the Dohm remains on my wife’s nightstand and is running every night. I sleep better listening to the sound of soothing white noise while she’s able to fall asleep peacefully without having to hear my snoring.

Aside from bedroom and office use, the Dohm can help children, as well as infants, sleep since white noise can be very soothing. Marpac even has a sound machine that’s specifically designed for babies.

Other suggested uses include:

  • Those who suffer from tinnitus
  • Students who need a quiet environment to study in
  • Travelers who want to eliminate the sound of other guests
  • Shift workers who sleep during the day

The Dohm is versatile and can be helpful for anyone who is looking to drown out noise, whether it’s a loud neighbor, traffic, or a husband that snores. The Dohm classic is one product that I can wholeheartedly recommend.

Serta iComfort Blue 100 Gentle Firm Mattress Review

I receive free products and participate in affiliate programs where I may receive a commission, at no cost to you, if you visit a merchant’s site and make a purchase using links from within this page.

Serta iComfort Blue100 Gentle Firm Mattress

The Serta iComfort foam series is the latest offering by Serta, the number one American mattress manufacturer.

The iComfort is sold in several different levels of firmness including firm, cushion firm, elite luxury firm, gentle firm, plush and elite plush.

The “Blue” collection is the least expensive of the iComfort series and is only offered in firm and gentle firm while the “Blue Max” is more expensive, offered in four firmness levels, and is made with more innovative materials.

In this review, I will be examining the Blue 100 Gentle Firm mattress, which is the least expensive of the six available options. This mattress has a firmness that’s somewhere in the mid-range – not too soft yet not too firm.

The Blue 100 is a four-layer viscoelastic mattress that measures approximately 9 3/4″ in thickness. It’s available in all sizes ranging from Twin to California King.

Serta claims that this mattress offers enhanced breathability to keep you cool at night, superior pressure relief, and great support. How true are these claims?

During this review, I’m going to walk you through what it’s like to own this mattress, discussing everything from shipping and arrival to motion isolation as well as the heat dissipating properties of this mattress. Go ahead and grab a cup of coffee, this is going to be a long one.

Arrival, Unpacking, Assembly

Although the Blue 100 is a viscoelastic foam mattress, Serta doesn’t deliver it compressed and rolled up like most foam mattress companies do. Instead, it arrives full-size and encased in plastic.

Due to the size and weight of this mattress, Serta uses a logistics company called MDX who provides white glove delivery. The day before the delivery date, I received a phone call from the delivery company confirming a delivery time frame. The next day, the delivery truck was in route and I was able to track it using the delivery services website. The tracking showed an estimated delivery time as well as which stop the truck was currently on.

The mattress arrived on time and was delivered inside of my home by two gentlemen who offered to move it wherever I wanted. The entire process was smooth and couldn’t have been easier.

I chose to leave the mattress inside the protective plastic until I was able to get around to reviewing it. Removal of the plastic and disposal is, however, part of the white glove delivery service that comes standard as is setting up the bed.

Once ready, I cut and removed the plastic cover from the mattress and it put it to use. I must admit, it was nice not having to wrestle with unboxing a compressed mattress and then disposing of the box and plastic wrapping. This one required no unboxing, time to decompress, or assembly. From the moment that it arrived, it was ready to sleep on if so desired.

The Smell Test

Nearly all new furniture that contains foam will produce some off-gassing which is usually noticeable within the first few days that it enters your home. Think of it as the smell of the inside of a new car.

As the mattress airs out, it becomes less noticeable and eventually disappears. Boxed mattresses that are compressed into an airtight roll will produce more off-gassing when unpacked than those which were not because they don’t have an opportunity to air out prior to shipping.

Serta participates in the CertiPUR-US program which means their foams are tested and contain low Volatile Organic Compound emissions, or VOCs, which are responsible for the that “new” smell. In order to become certified, the foam must contain less than 0.5 parts per million of VOCs. This is a very minimum amount.

The first test that I perform is rather simple and involves describing how the mattress smells.

After removing the plastic cover from the mattress, I didn’t notice much of a smell at all. In order to detect any scent, I had to bury my face in the mattress. Only then did I detect a faint smell that was not at all offensive. It didn’t make me gag or choke as I have before with other mattresses which are often not CertiPUR certified. Within the first couple of days, the faint smell had dissipated and was no longer detectable.

Heat Dissipation Test

While older foam mattresses have been criticized for trapping body heat, newer foam technology now offers a cooler sleeping experience than the mattresses that came before.

The Blue 100 uses two layers of specialty foam to combat body heat. First, the top layer contains 3/4″ of TempActive Gel Memory Foam which is a gel-infused foam that’s specifically designed to carry heat away from the body. This viscoelastic material not only cools but also provides pressure relief.

The second layer is a 2″ layer of EverCool Fuze material that offers a supportive feel along with a cool, plush touch. Between the two layers, there’s a combined total of nearly 3″ of cooling foam.

While all of this sounds great, you are probably wondering exactly how cool this mattress sleeps. Aside from sleeping on the mattress and offering my opinion, I also conducted a heat dissipation test to give you a better idea of the cooling properties of this mattress.

For this test, I heated a large rice sack in the microwave for two minutes and then placed it on top of the bed. I let it rest for several minutes to allow time for the heat to transfer.

After 10 minutes, I removed the rice sack and measured the temperature drop during the two minutes that followed using an infrared thermometer. Check out the results below.

Time (Seconds)Temperature °F
0124.4°
10
112.4°
20107.6°
30104.9°
40102.5°
50101.0°
6099.5°
7098.6°
8096.8°
9095.9°
10095.6°
11095.0°
12094.1°

As you can see, this mattress lost a significant amount of heat during the first twenty seconds of the test and continued to cool down at a steady rate for the remainder of the testing period.

The iComfort started out 124.4° and cooled down to 94.4°, a loss of 30°. When compared to other foam mattresses, the cooling properties of this one are excellent.

While sleeping on this mattress, both my wife and I agreed that it sleeps very cool and did not trap heat.

Firmness Test

Firmness can be described as the feel of a mattress when you lay down on it. Firmness will vary based on the density and ILD rating of the foam that’s used inside of the mattress. Using foams with a higher ILD base layer will provide a firmer mattress.

Serta considers the iComfort Blue 100 to be a “gentle firm” mattress.

While mattress firmness is a matter of personal preference, most back sleepers, as well as some side sleepers, will find a firmer mattress to be comfortable while stomach sleepers often choose a softer mattress. Also, those who are heavier typically choose a firmer mattress that can provide more support.

In order to demonstrate the firmness of this mattress, I simply placed a 42 lb weight on the surface of the mattress and use a ruler along with a straight edge to measure the drop. In this case, I used a bucket that has been filled with 42 lbs of concrete as a weight.

The test showed that the mattress compressed 2″ with 42 lbs of weight over an area that’s 8.5″ in diameter. Comparing this to other medium-firm mattresses that I’ve tested, I agree with Serta’s rating.

Body Support

While the firmness of a mattress describes how it feels, it doesn’t say much about its support.

It’s a common misconception that a mattress with a firm feel will provide better support than a mattress with a softer feel. While there can be a correlation between the two, mattress firmness and support are two characteristics that should be examined independently.

Mattress support can be viewed as how well the mattress relieves pressure in key areas while maintaining proper posture. If a mattress sinks in at the middle and causes the body to bow, it doesn’t provide proper support.

When laying on the mattress, I asked my wife to observe the alignment of my body. Her opinion was that my body remained flat and appeared in line. When sleeping on this mattress, my body felt great in the morning with no noticeable aches or pains.

Recovery Time

Mattress recovery refers to how fast the mattress returns to its original shape after being compressed.

Some foam takes seconds to respond when weight is removed while other foams respond nearly instantly.

A mattress with a slow recovery can leave you feeling stuck inside and unable to roll over or get out of the bed. While some sleep in one position throughout the night, others have a tendency to toss and turn throughout the night. A slow recovering mattress can be problematic for active sleepers.

To get an idea of how this mattress responds, take a look a the video below. As you can see, the base layer of the mattress responds fairly quickly while the top layer of foam gel material responds with a slight delay.

When sleeping on the mattress, I was able to roll over and change positions without experiencing the feeling of being stuck in the mattress.

Motion Isolation Test

Motion isolation or motion transfer refers to how well the mattress localizes motion. In the case of two people sleeping in the same bed, how well does the mattress prevent the other person from feeling movement? This is something to consider if your partner is an active sleeper and moves throughout the night.

Fortunately, foam mattresses, in general, have good motion isolation qualities as they do not contain coil springs which can transfer motion.

To test the motion isolation properties of this mattress, I placed a wine glass on top of the mattress and dropped a 14 lb weight from a distance of 12″ and repeated the test three times. I also used a vibration meter to measure the movement of the mattress. The results of the test are shown below.

As you can see in the video below, there’s very little movement in the glass and it does not appear to come close to tipping over.

The vibration meter showed a max reading of 5.9 MMI and a mean of 2.4 MMI, which is fairly low.

Edge Support

The edge support of a mattress can be important, especially if you are sharing the mattress and need to take advantage of the entire surface area of the mattress.

A mattress with poor edge support may cause you to roll off of the bed if you lay too close to the edge. A firmer edge will support your weight, regardless of your position on the mattress.

When laying close to the edge of the iComfort mattress, I did not experience the feeling of being ejected from the bed.

When sitting on the edge, I did sink down some but remained elevated well above the mattress platform.

The Company

Odds are, you have already heard of Serta mattresses. After all, they are the largest mattress manufacturer in the United States and sell a variety of different types of mattresses including traditional innerspring, memory foam, hybrid, and even a latex collection.

The company was formed in 1931 as Sleeper Incorporated and has since been restructured and changed hands several times. Today, Serta International operates as a subsidiary of Serta Simmons Holding LLC, based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

Serta prides itself in both designing and manufacturing their mattresses in the United States. This is something that not all mattress companies can claim as an increasing number are producing overseas. Serta operates 36 manufacturing facilities in the US as well as one in Puerto Rico and five in Canada.

Serta offers a large collection of mattresses including the Perfect Sleeper, iComfort, Mattress in a Box, Sertapedic, Hotel Mattresses as well as an exclusive collection which includes the iSeries Hybrid and the Bellagio at Home.

Construction

The Blue 100 is made using four layers of foam and is wrapped in a proprietary cool-to-the-touch cover. Let’s take a closer look at what’s inside of this mattress.

Comfort Layer

The comfort layer contains two layers of memory foam with a combined thickness of 2.75″.

First up, the TempActiv Gel Memory Foam which is 3/4″ thick and is a layer of memory foam that’s infused with cooling gel beads. The purpose of this gel is to absorb body heat and dissipate it away from the mattress in order to keep your body cool.

Just beneath the TempActive layer is a 2″ layer of EveryCool Fuze Gel Memory Foam. The purpose of this layer is to help promote the movement of air while providing pressure point relief.

As we all know, memory foam can trap body heat and leave you sleeping on a hot and uncomfortable mattress. This layer also contains a bit of gel and is designed to allow air to flow freely between the TempActiv Layer and the transition layer.

Transition Layer

In order to create a smooth transition between the comfort layer and support layer, Serta used a 1″ slab of Balanced Support Foam. This layer offers support without compromising comfort.

Support Layer

All mattresses need a support layer. Without one, you will experience poor sleeping posture which can affect the way your body feels in the morning and throughout the day.

Beneath the transition layer, Serta uses a 6″ layer of Ultimate Edge Foam Support Core which supports the body in order to provide the best night sleep possible. Although not disclosed, this layer typically has a high ILD rating.

One unique feature of this layer is its edge support which helps to keep you on the bed when you lay close to the edge. Some foam mattresses will literally throw you from the bed if you roll over. Having a good edge support is helpful if you plan to share your bed with another person.

Firmness Options

The iComfort mattress comes in six different firmness levels which will vary depending on the model that you choose.

If you want to go with their firmest mattress, the Blue 300 fits the bill. The Blue Max 100 is the next firmest mattress followed by the Blue Max 5000.

From there, the Blue 100 model begins to cross over to the softer side followed by the Blue Max 1000 Plush and then the Blue Max 3000 Elite Plush, which is this softest mattress that they offer in this series.

Each mattress in this series varies in price and construction. The mattress featured in this review is the Blue 100 and is a medium-firm mattress which is not too firm yet not too soft.

Limited 10-Year Warranty

The Blue 100 comes with a 10-year limited warranty that’s similar to other mattresses in the industry.

Body impressions or sagging greater than .75″ are covered with this warranty. They do ask that the bed is properly supported, meaning it must have a center support along with at least five cross slats. The center support must have legs that extend down to the floor.

The warranty does not cover items such as comfort preference, damage due to abuse or misuse, tears, burns, stains, soiling, mattress fabric, zipper damage due to improper care, normal change in firmness or impression less than 3/4″.

There’s nothing that really stands out about this warranty as it’s almost identical to the majority of mattress warranties out there.

Pricing & Shipping

The price of the Blue 100 varies according to the size that you choose. Prices start at $659.00 for the Twin and go up to $1,599.00 for the California King. Perhaps the most popular, the queen, sells for $1,099.00.

Free white glove delivery is included with all orders. White glove delivery simply means that two people will deliver the mattress, carry it up to two flights of steps, unpack it, set up the mattress and remove debris as well as the old mattress if you desire.

Heres a chart showing each size mattress and the cost associated with it.

SizePrice
Twin$659.00
Twin XL$749.00
Full$919.00
Queen$1,099.00
King$1,599.00
Cali. King$1,599.00

Financing Options

Serta does offer the iComfort credit card which gives you the ability to pay the mattress off with 0% financing over sixty months. This offer is only available to qualified buyers. Any balance beyond the 60 month period will be charged 29.49% APR.

This credit card has no annual fee and special financing is only available for Serta purchases.

120 Night Trial

The iComfort series does come with a 120-night in-home trial that allows you to try out the mattress in your home before deciding to keep it.

Serta does ask that you sleep on the mattress for a break in period of at least thirty nights. This will allow your body to adjust to the new mattress.

Anytime between 30 days to 120 days you are able to contact their customer support and request a refund or choose another mattress.

Serta does deduct $200 from the initial purchase price for shipping and handling. They also charge a 15% return and disposal fee, since the mattress will no longer be sellable after use.

Final Thoughts

Choosing on a mattress may seem like an impossible task with so many options. One way to narrow down your list is to choose a mattress that’s made by one of the oldest and most trusted names in the industry.

While the iComfort is one of the newest mattresses to hit the market under the Serta name, it was created by a company that has been in the mattress business for over 80 years, unlike many of the newer startups which offers a “white label” product that’s made by another manufacturer.

The Serta iComfort Blue 100 is an outstanding mattress that is reasonably priced and has everything that you would ever want in a foam mattress. This mattress remains cool and comfortable throughout the night while delivering excellent pressure relief and support.

This mattress is responsive yet does an excellent job isolating motion. Although it’s a foam mattress, it does a great job dissipating heat, due to the layers of patented gel memory foam.

Overall, this is one mattress that I would recommend to anyone who would like to try a foam mattress.

Morphiis Mattress (Perfect Pressure) Review

Some people enjoy sleeping on a firmer mattress while others like their mattress a bit on the softer side. If you share your bed with a partner, there’s a good chance that the two of you have different preferences when it comes to mattress firmness.

The issue is, nearly all mattresses come with the same comfort level on both sides. If you like a firm mattress while she prefers a medium soft mattress, you are faced with the decision of choosing one mattress over the other or compromising by choosing a mattress with a comfort level that’s somewhere in the middle.

Either way, one or both partners may end up sleeping on a mattress that they are not comfortable with for the next 10 or more years.

To further complicate matters, many foam mattress retailers these days are using a one-size-fits-most approach, offering their mattress in one “universal” firmness level which is typically in the medium range.

In order for all to be happy, both partners must enjoy the same firmness level and it must be the universal firmness level chosen by the manufacturer that you decide to go with. It’s easy to see how this can be problematic.

Morphiis has come up with a solution to this problem. They offer a mattress that allows you to customize each side to create a personalized sleep experience for both you and your partner to enjoy.

The concept of a customizable mattress seems very interesting so I was more excited than ever to give the Morphiis a try.

Throughout this review, I’m going to share my experience with Morphiis and walk you through what it’s like to own one. By the end, you will know if this mattress is something that might be a good fit for you and your partner.

Alright, let’s get started!

Arrival, Unpacking, Assembly

Unlike most press and roll mattresses that come in a box, my queen size Morphiis arrived in a cylindrical bag, measuring 58″ long X 17″ in diameter and weighing approximately 79 lbs.

The mattress was shipped via UPS ground service and took 5 days to arrive from East Petersburg, PA.

At nearly 5′ in length, the bag was rather tall and heavy which meant that it required the help of my wife to carry it upstairs into the bedroom.

Once there, I removed the blue bag that covered the mattress and laid it out on the bed.

The package came with some instructions as well as a letter opener which is used to slice through the plastic that holds the mattress together.

Using the opener, I cut through the plastic and the bed sprung open.

The “medium” inserts were packaged inside the bed while the “soft” and “firm” inserts were packaged outside of the mattress.

Two insert storage bags were also included inside the package.

After unpacking everything, I let the mattress and foam sit overnight to ensure that it was fully expanded. Morphiis suggests giving the mattress up to 24 hours to fully expand.

After doing some reading, I determined that the medium arrangement sounded like it would be the best fit for myself. My wife decided that the soft may suit her needs better.

I arranged the mattress with all soft (yellow) on her side and all medium (blue) on my side.

I then zipped up the cover and we slept on the mattress for the next 3 nights.

While we were both satisfied with the feel of the mattress, we decided to rearrange a few areas to find the optimal arrangement.

I decided to swap out the midsection area for the firm (white) inserts while my wife swapped out the same area, also using the firm inserts.

Laying down on the bed, be both could feel an immediate difference in support. At this point, we agreed that this arrangement was perfect for each of us and kept it in this arrangement.

The Smell Test

Foam mattresses have a tendency to give off an odor when they are unwrapped and begin to air out. This odor is caused by what’s known as off-gassing where Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are released into the air.

Nearly all new products off-gas to some degree. Off-gassing becomes an issue when the smell is overpowering and lasts for a long period of time.

Morphiis is CertiPUR-US certified, which means that off-gassing shouldn’t be much of an issue. As a part of the CertiPUR testing process, VOC emissions are checked to ensure that levels are less than 0.5 PPM.

After unpacking a mattress, I always give it the smell test where I put my face into the mattress and give it a whiff.

When unpacking the Morphiis, I did notice some “new foam” smell although this odor eventually disappeared after a few days.

Heat Dissipation Test

Choosing a mattress that sleeps cool is a good idea if you have a tendency to sweat at night.

Due to the nature of foam, some mattresses have a tendency to trap heat which can make sleeping on them quite uncomfortable. This is especially true when it comes to foams that were made many years ago.

The foam used in most mattresses today tend to breathe better due to advancements in foam manufacturing.

Morphiis advertises their mattress as having a comfort layer that adapts to your body and enhances airflow. Their outer cover is said to keep you cool and comfortable by promoting airflow throughout the night.

How does the Morphiis measure up to other mattresses? Does it really sleep cool?

When sleeping on this mattress, neither my wife or I experienced any issues overheating. In fact, we felt as though it slept fairly cool.

In order to demonstrate the cooling capabilities of this mattress, I conducted a heat dissipation test which shows how well this mattress dissipates body heat.

To simulate a person sleeping on the bed, I heated up a large rice bag in the microwave for two minutes and then placed it on top of the mattress.

After allowing it to sit and transfer heat for 10 minutes, I removed the bag and used an infrared thermometer to measure the surface temperature of the mattress.

At the time of removing the rice bag, the mattress temperature was at 119.6°. Within two minutes, the temperature lowered to 90.8°. During this time period, the temperature dropped an incredible 28.8°.

The chart below shows the rate at which the mattress lost heat. As you can see, Morphiis experienced a huge amount of heat loss within the first 20 seconds.

From there, the temperature gradually dropped until the last few seconds where it began to flatten.

Firmness Test

Mattress firmness can be thought of as how stiff a mattress feels whenever you lay on it.

Does it feel hard as a rock or soft as a cloud? Perhaps it has a firmness level somewhere in between. In this case, we would refer to the mattress as being “medium”.

While the majority of people are okay with a medium firm mattress, others prefer one that’s either softer or firmer. Mattress firmness is a personal preference which will vary from one person to another.

One very distinct advantage of the Morphiis mattress is not only are you able to experiment with different mattress firmness levels, you can also personalize the firmness on your side of the bed.

Most beds don’t allow you to adjust the firmness level at all and very few allow adjusting on each side of the bed. Morphiis allows both.

To demonstrate mattress firmness, I filled a 2-gallon bucket with 42 lbs of concrete and placed it on the bed. A ruler and straightedge were used to measure the surface drop of the mattress.

First, I tested the firmness of the medium inserts and found that the mattress had dropped about 2.25″.

I then removed the medium inserts and replaced them with the firm and soft inserts. The soft inserts caused the mattress to drop an additional 1/4″ while the firm brought the weight up 1/4″.

There was a noticeable difference in mattress firmness when comparing the soft to the firm.

Body Support

A mattress can be comfortable yet provide very little support. When this happens, your body will let you know in the morning as you will notice aching and other discomforts.

The key is to find a mattress that has the firmness and support that your body needs in order to fully recover and get a restful nights sleep.

How can you tell if a mattress properly supports your body?

The easiest way is to have a partner or friend take a look at your body while laying on the mattress. If your back bends in the middle, the mattress is not providing enough support.

Your posture should be in line and your body should lay flat when laying down in bed.

I had my wife observe the alignment of my body while laying down on the Morphiis and she noted that I was using good posture. I had observed her laying posture and found that her body also remained aligned while laying in both the back and side position.

Recovery Time

Recovery time refers to how fast the mattress bounces back when you remove pressure from it.

There are many different types of foam out there and they all respond differently to pressure. Depending on the type and density of the foam, recovery may be nearly instant or could take several seconds.

Slow responding foams are generally not a good choice for mattresses because they can leave you feeling trapped as you roll over.

A mattress with a fast recovery time is ideal for active sleepers who change positions multiple times throughout the night.

In the recovery test, I press down on the mattress several times and then quickly remove my hand so that you can see how fast the mattress responds.

As shown in the video below, Morphiis has a very fast recovery time. I had no issues freely moving around this mattress.

Motion Isolation Test

Motion Isolation or motion transfer refers to the ability of a mattress to localize motion. In other words, when your partner moves, does the entire bed move with them?

This is an important consideration if you sleep next to a partner who disrupts your sleep by moving around throughout the night. A night of disturbed sleep will prevent you from getting a proper nights rest and will leave you feeling tired during the day.

Some mattresses are better at isolating motion than others. For instance, a mattress with coils that are wired together will transfer a lot of motion while an all foam mattress transfers very little motion.

Since the Morphiis is an all foam mattress, I expected it to perform well in this test.

To demonstrate motion isolation, I used a water-filled wine glass and a 14 lb weight. I also measured the vibration of the mattress with a vibration meter app.

In this test, I place the vibration meter near that glass and dropped the weight from the opposite side of the bed from a distance of 12″. This test was repeated 3 times.

The results show very little movement in the glass. The meter showed a mean reading of 2.5 MMI and a max of 5.7 MMI, which is fairly low.

Edge Support

If you are thinking about buying a foam mattress, edge support should be taken into consideration.

A low-density foam near the edge of the bed can cause you to fall off if you get too close.

If you are sharing your bed with a partner, having good edge support is essential as you may need to utilize every square inch of surface area of the mattress.

In order to test the edge support, I start by sitting on the edge. As with most foam mattresses, the edge of the Morphiis did not hold up very well while sitting.

When laying in the mattress, I was able to lay towards the very edge without feeling as if I would be tossed from the bed.

While this mattress may not be best suited for sitting, it works well for the purpose of laying. My wife and I slept comfortably on the bed without issue.

The Company

Morphiis is produced by Perfect Pressure LLC, a company based out of Aventura, Florida. The company is headed by Earl Takefman who spent many years leading numerous public companies from across the US.

The idea of the Morphiis born from a 5 zone mattress that was introduced by the company as the “Perfect Pressure Mattress”.

In 2017, using the original concept of a zoned mattress, Takefman designed and created the Morphiis to address the issue of partners who couldn’t agree on a firmness level as well as to address the issue of those who found their original mattress to be too hard or soft. The Morphiis was the perfect solution that allowed each person to customize their bed exactly how they wanted it.

Today, it seems as if the Perfect Pressure mattress has been phased out and the Morphiis is now its replacement.

Aside from their mattress, Perfect Pressure LLC also sells a customizable mattress topper as well as a customizable pillow and an adjustable bed frame.

The one thing that all of their products have in common is that they are adjustable and customizable which seems to be their focus.

Mattress Construction

Morphiis comes in six standard sizes ranging from twin to California King and is a total of 10″ thick.

The basic construction of each mattress is the same, regardless of the size that you choose.

Morphiis stresses the fact that their mattresses are made from “ultra” foam instead of memory foam which has a tendency to sleep hot and leave you feeling stuck inside of the mattress. Ultra foam is quick to respond which combats this issue.

The main portion of the Morphiis includes a 5.5″ thick base layer and edge supports that are joined together to form one unit. This portion of the mattress is made from a high-density foam which offers rigidity and support.

The mattress can be laid on top of a box spring, platform, or slatted bed (no more than 3″ between slats). Due to the design of the base, it also works quite well with an adjustable bed frame.

Six slots run along either side of the mattress allow you to add Morph>it comfort inserts in the orientation that you desire. All mattresses have a total of 12 slots with the exception of the twin size which only has six.

Each mattress, with the exception of the twin, comes with 36 foam inserts, 12 soft, 12 medium, and 12 firm. The twin size comes with only 18 – 6 soft, 6 medium, and 6 firm. The comfort inserts measure 25″ x 9″ and are 2.5″ thick.

To top the mattress off, a 2″ slab of ultra foam is laid across the entire surface area and is finished with a breathable outer cover that’s made from a blend of 83% polyester and 17% glass fiber.

I was unable to find any information on the density or ILD rating of the foams that are used in this mattress.

CertiPUR-US Certification

When shopping for a mattress, it’s always a good idea to check to see if the foam that’s used in the mattress is CertiPUR-US certified. Being certified lessens the chance of receiving a mattress that is potentially dangerous to your health.

CertiPUR-US is a not-for-profit organization that tests foam products and the issues a certification if the foam meets certain standards. Participation in the program is voluntary and there is no cost to the manufacturer. There’s really not a good reason why a mattress should not be certified.

In order become certified, the foam must not contain ozone depleters, PBDE, TDCCP or TCEP flame retardants, heavy metals such as lead or mercury, formaldehyde, regulated phthalates, and must have low VOC emissions of less than 0.5 PPM.

CertiPUR requires that all foams are retested each year to ensure that they are still in compliance.

The CertiPUR website contains an A-Z directory of all participating companies. While Morphiis does not appear on the list, the company “Perfect Pressure” does.

64 Firmness Options

Most mattress-in-a-box companies do not give you a choice when it comes to firmness level and those who do may offer only three options.

Each Morphiis mattress comes with enough foam inserts to allow you to configure your mattress in 64 different ways.

While 64 options to choose from may seem overwhelming, they make it easy by offering a few popular configurations suggestions.

They also have a tool on their website that provides recommended configurations based on a few questions that you answer about your height, weight, sleeping position, preferred firmness, etc. After answering these questions, you will be given an illustration that shows exactly how to set your mattress up.

Install the inserts as suggested, sleep on it for a few nights and make adjustments as necessary.

You can fine-tune your mattress by swapping out the inserts. For instance, if you have an injury, have a troubled area that needs more support, or are pregnant, you have the ability to adjust the inserts as you see fit.

Warranty

Nearly every mattress comes with some sort of warranty and Morphiis is no exception.

Their warranty period is 25 years and covers only the original owner which means that it’s non-transferrable. Most mattresses come with a 10 years warranty, so one that’s 25 years is exceptional.

This warranty covers:

  • Indentations greater than 1.25″
  • Physical flaws in the foam
  • Manufacturer defects in the workmanship

It does not cover:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Mattresses that are used for unintended purposes
  • Minor Imperfections
  • Increased softness in mattress not affecting pressure relief qualities
  • Improperly supported mattresses
  • Abusive handling, misuse, or neglect

In general, the warranty is similar to nearly every other manufacturer’s with the exception of the extended warranty period that’s 15 years longer than average.

Pricing

Morphiis is available in six different sizes from twin to California king. The price of each mattress differs according to size. Larger mattresses require more material to manufacture, so the cost is going to be higher.

Expect to pay between $595.00 and $1,195 depending on the size that you choose.

If dropping several hundred dollars on a mattress is not in your budget, Morphiis works with Klarna and Blispay to offer payment plans.

Right now, they are offering 0% financing to qualified buyers who pay off their mattress within 12 months.

If your balance extends beyond this time period, their financing charges are 19.99% APR.

Going the payment route with 0% financing, expect to pay between $49.58 a month and $99.58 a month depending on the mattress size that you choose.

The table below shows the cost associated with each size mattress.

SizePriceFinancing
Twin$595.00$49.58/mo.
Twin XL$650.00$54.16/mo.
Full$850.00$70.83/mo.
Queen$995.00$82.92/mo.
King$1,195.00$99.58/mo.
Cali. King$1,195.00$99.58/mo.

Risk-Free Trial

Buying a mattress online without ever seeing it first hand is a completely new concept for most people.

Knowing this, many in the industry now offer “free trial” periods that last anywhere from 30-nights up to a year.

Morphiis offers a 100-night trail with a 100% money back guarantee.

In the event that the mattress is not a good fit, you can request a refund within 100 days of receiving your mattress with no questions asked.

While their return policy is very generous, you really only need a week or two to determine if a mattress is going to work out for you. 100 nights is a bit excessive, although it may come in handy if needed.

Returning the mattress is easy. You simply call or email Morphiis and they will schedule a mattress pick-up. Since it can not be resold, your mattress will be donated to charity.

Final Thoughts

Morpiis is a unique customizable mattress that allows both partners to choose a unique level of firmness for each side of the bed.

You can choose from a soft, medium, or firm feel and adjust the 6 inserts on each side to any configuration that you desire. This allows you to provide more or less support where needed.

Morphiis comes with a 25-year warranty which is better than most mattresses which are offered with a 10-year warranty. A longer warranty period may indicate a higher quality of foam that will not quickly break down or compress.

Morphiis is CertiPUR-US certified which reassures that the foam used in the mattress does not contain any harmful chemicals or toxins.

A 100-night warranty very generous and will ensure that you don’t end up owning a mattress that you are not happy with.

Overall, Morphiis has a lot to offer. It’s customizable, comfortable, supportive and has several other benefits, making it one mattress worth considering if you are thinking about foam.

Molecule Mattress Review – Is It Really Any Different?

I receive free products and participate in affiliate programs where I may receive a commission, at no cost to you, if you visit a merchant’s site and make a purchase using links from within this page.

OnMolecule Foam Mattress Review

Today, mattress shoppers are offered a seemingly endless number of choices. One question that often comes to mind when deciding on a mattress is “What makes this one different?”.

After all, most mattresses-in-a-box are simply 3-4 layers of foam glued together with a cover stretched over top.

In the end, it comes down to the design and quality of materials that are used.

In 2018, Chicago-based mattress company Molecule was launched, differentiating itself by offering a mattress that enhances sleep quality. Their marketing seems to be geared towards those who live an active lifestyle and are interested in improving sleep in order to enhance daytime performance.

They claim to have developed an “Air-Engineered” mattress which has been designed to maximize support and comfort while offering superior cooling qualities. All of this to promote the best recovery sleep ever.

But is Molecule as cool and comfortable as they claim? Is it really any different? Does it really improve performance?

Follow along as I put the Molecule mattress to the test and answer these questions as well as several others.

I’ll closely examine the components of the Molecule and put it through a series of tests to show you what this mattress is made of. I’ll also spend several nights on this mattress and offer my personal opinion on how it sleeps.

Arrival, Unpacking & Setup

My queen size Molecule mattress shipped from Auburn, Indiana via FedEx. The total transit time was only 3 days.

The Molecule arrived in a 19″ X 19″ X 42″ box and weighed about 79lbs.

After removing it from the box, I recruited my wife to help me carry the mattress upstairs. I found that carrying the mattress is definitely a two-person job if you want to avoid pulling your back out.

The process of unpacking the Molecule mattress was identical to all other mattresses-in-a-box that I’ve tried. They did provide a letter opener which helped to unwrap the mattress without cutting the material.

I laid the molecule out on my existing wood slat bed frame and cut along the flat seam of the mattress. Nearly instantly, the mattress expanded like an opened can of biscuits.

While the mattress was ready to use almost immediately, I waited until the next night to give it a little extra time to expand.

Start-to-finish, the Molecule mattress took less than 10 minutes to set up.

The Smell Test

Some foam mattresses give off a smell that can be really irritating. This smell comes from off-gassing which is caused by the release of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that emit from freshly made foam. Think of it as the “new car” smell.

VOCs are found in most manufactured goods at some level. High levels of VOCs will not only irritate the airway but may also be harmful to your health.

Molecule is CertiPUR-US certified and one thing they check for is VOCs emissions. In order to become certified, VOC levels must test at less than 0.5 parts per million.

In addition to being CertiPUR-US certified, the foam used in the Molecule is made using Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF). This eco-friendly manufacturing process occurs in an air-tight controlled environment. The air is scrubbed through a charcoal filter which eliminates most off-gassing in the final product.

Knowing that this mattress is CertiPUR-US certified and made using VPF, I felt fairly confident that it would not produce any strong odors.

After opening, I placed my face down into the mattress and took a deep breath. The mattress had a very faint smell that was not at all offensive and disappeared after a day. The smell was likely caused by the non-toxic water-based adhesive that Molecule uses to glue together the slabs of foam.

Heat Dissipation Test

Molecule seems to have put a lot of effort into designing an “air-engineered” mattress, so I was curious to learn exactly how well this mattress performed when heated up.

Some foam mattresses are known to retain heat. In recent years, foam mattress manufacturers have come up with some clever ways to combat this issue.

Molecule is topped with a proprietary open-cell foam that is said to provide consistent cooling, even when compressed by body weight.

The polyester/ elastane blended cover also helps by wicking moisture away from the mattress, keeping your body cool and dry.

In addition, Molecule also offers a sheet set that’s specifically designed to keep your bed cool and dry.

Before sleeping on the bed, I performed a heat dissipation test to give you an idea of how cool this mattress sleeps.

Here’s how I went about performing this test:

  1.  Heat a 3lb rice sack in the microwave for two minutes and placed it on top of the mattress, leaving it to rest for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove the bag. The mattress temperature was now at 127 degrees
  3. Using a heat gun and stopwatch, I tracked the heat loss over a two minute period.

Take a look at the temperature drop in the chart below.

Time (Seconds)Temperature °F
0127°
10
108.8°
20107.6°
30104.6°
40101.6°

7096.5°
8095.3°
9094.1°
10093.5°
11092.3°
12091.7°

As you can see, the mattress cooled rapidly, dropping a total of 35.3 degrees in 2 minutes.

The majority of heat loss occurred during the first 20 seconds and slowly tapered off from there.

When sleeping on the Molecule mattress with the molecule sheets, the bed remained cool, dry, and comfortable throughout the night.

Firmness Test

The firmness of a mattress refers to how soft or hard a mattress feels.

Measuring the feel of a mattress can be subjective and will differ from one person to another.

Firmness is often expressed as a number on a 1-10 scale. Manufacturers will assign a number along with a description such as “very soft” which describes a mattress rated at a 1 to “very hard” which would describe a mattress that’s rated at a 10.

Molecule describes this mattress as a “medium firm” or a 6.5.

In order to give you an idea of the firmness level of this mattress, I performed a simple test involving a concrete-filled bucket, ruler, and straightedge.

For this test, I simply fastened a ruler to the side of a 42lb bucket and used a straightedge to determine how far the bucket dropped down.

The test showed that the mattress dropped 2.5″ which is consistent with other medium-firm mattresses that I’ve tested.

When laying on the mattress, it felt more soft than firm. I would actually rate the firmness of this mattress somewhere around a 5.

Body Support

Support is one characteristic that many people fail to consider when shopping for a mattress.

While it’s easy to confuse firmness with support, these are actually two entirely different characteristics. Firmness relates to the comfort of a mattress while support refers to how well the mattress relieves pressure and keeps your body aligned.

A mattress can be firm yet provide no support while at the same time a very soft mattress can provide proper support.

How well a mattress supports your body depends greatly on your body type and size.

When sleeping on the Molecule, I work up without any aching or joint pain, which is an indicator that the mattress provided proper support.

I asked my wife to observe me laying on the bed to see if my body was aligned. I was told that my body remained straight with no bending while laying on both my back and side.

Remember, I’m 6’1 and 215 lbs. Your results may vary depending on your body size and type.

Recovery Time

Recovery time refers to how quickly the mattress bounces back after weight is removed.

When weight is applied to a foam mattress, the foam is going to compress. The question is, how long does it take to recover?

A mattress with a long recovery period may leave you feeling stuck inside the mattress when you try to roll over or get out of bed. This can become rather uncomfortable, especially if you are an active sleeper who turns over multiple times during the night.

I found that the molecule mattress responded fairly quickly whenever I changed positions while laying down.

In order to demonstrate the recovery rate of this mattress, I pressed down on it several times and created the video above so that you can see how quickly it recovers.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is something that you will want to consider if you are sleeping with a partner who is active in their sleep.

Motion isolation or motion transfer refers to how well the mattress can localize or absorb one’s movement.

A bed partner that moves around a lot at night will prevent you from getting a rejuvenating night of rest. The slightest movement caused by your partner can prevent you from falling into a deep sleep which means you may wake up feeling less than refreshed.

Fortunately, most foam mattresses are very effective when it comes to isolating motion. Compared to coil mattresses, foam mattresses such as the Molecule are superior.

The motion isolation test involves a wine glass that’s filled with water, a vibration meter app, and a 14lb weight that’s dropped from the opposite side of the bed from a distance of one foot. This test is repeated three times.

The above video shows the motion transfer test in action.

As you can see, the glass moved very little and the vibration meter showed a low mean reading of 2.2 MMI and a max rating of 5.5 MMI.

It’s safe to say that this mattress performed very well in the motion isolation test.

Edge Support

When laying on a mattress, you’ll want to choose one that can hold your body weight even when laying close to the edge.

Cheaper foam mattresses that contain low-density foam have a tendency to collapse when you lay close to the edge. If you are sharing your bed with a partner, this is something that you should consider as every square inch of your mattress should be usable.

When laying on the Molecule, I was able to roll all the way to the edge without experiencing the feeling of being ejected from the bed. Some mattresses will literally toss you onto the floor if you get too close to the edge. With the Molecule, this was not an issue.

Molecule Sheets

For an even cooler sleeping bed, Molecule recommends using their sheet set along with their bed.

Molecule sheets are not your standard cotton sheet set. They are made from a blend of 48% TENCEL Lyocell fibers and 52% cotton. This fabric is designed to keep your body cool and provide a silk-like sleeping surface.

The key feature is the TENCLE fibers which has moisture-wicking properties.

You can purchase the sheet set in any size and in the colors Ivory, Powder Blue, Cloud Gray, or White for $199 (queen size).

These sheets also come with a 60-night sleep trial, which allows you to return them if you are not satisfied and receive a full refund.

I experienced sleeping on the Molecule sheet set and found them to be super-soft, silky and cool. They had a very luxurious look and feel and appeared to be a high-quality product.

While I used these sheets on my Molecule bed, I also tested them on another foam mattress and found that they also performed well, keeping my bed cool and dry.

The 15″ deep sheets fitted nicely over my 12″ Molecule mattress and remained in place throughout the night.

While a little bit pricey, these sheets are well worth it and will give your mattress a deluxe, high-end feel.

The Company

Molecule was launched in early 2018 and is headed by Albert Oh and Co-founder Raymond Lyle.

Their website doesn’t offer any additional information regarding how the company was created.

While Molecule has only been around for a short period of time, they have amassed a rather impressive list of sleep scientists and athletes who are brand ambassadors.

Athletes such as quarterback Russel Wilson, rower and gold medalist, Susan Francia, and marathon runner Ryan Hall are among the many who have positive things to say about this mattress.

Neurologist Dr. Daniel Barone and clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Breus both agree that the cooling properties offered by Molecule are ideal for promoting restful sleep.

Mattress Construction

Molecule is assembled in the United States from 100% polyurethane foam. In total, it’s 12″ thick and contains three different layers of foams wrapped in a moisture-wicking cover.  Each component of this mattress serves a unique purpose.

The foam used in this mattress is created using the Variable Pressure Foaming (VPF) process which is the most eco-friendly way to produce foam. VPF foams are produced in an enclosed chamber and harmful blowing agents are not used.

Base / Foundation

The bottom layer, or base layer, is made from a 7″ thick slab of high-density foam with a rating of 1.5 lbs and an IFD of 35lbs. Molecule calls it their “ContourFlo” layer.

The density of a mattress refers to the weight of one cubic foot of foam. This is simply the number of pounds a 1’x’1×1′ sample of foam weighs.

IFD is an acronym for Indentation Force Deflection. This is the number of pounds of force that it would take to compress a piece of foam by 25% using an 8.25″ disk. The higher the IFD, the firmer the foam. Base foams often have a higher IFD rating.

A firm foundation is necessary as it helps to provide proper support and body alignment. Without it, your body will sink down into the mattress and you will receive no support.

Transition Layer

The transition layer, or middle layer, contains a unique 2″ thick hexagon-shaped foam material that is said to promote airflow. Molecule calls it their “RecoveryFlo” layer.

It has a density of 1.65 lbs and an IFD rating of 23 lbs which is slightly more dense than the base layer, yet has a softer feel due to the lower IFD rating.

The transition layer acts as an in-between layer that joins together the base with the top while helping to move trapped heat from within the mattress.

Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is simply the top layer of the mattress and is what you feel when you initially lay down on it.  They call this their “MolecularFlo” layer and it’s their proprietary foam which is said to deliver seven times the airflow of traditional memory foam and twice the amount of other manufacturers’.

This is a 3″ thick slab of foam with a density of 3lbs and an IFD rating between 7-9 lbs. It’s made from an open-cell foam which is more breathable than traditional memory foam which means that it’s going to cool better.

Cover

To complete their mattress, Molecule uses an “advanced cover” with an applied Microban antimicrobial treatment which helps to destroy bacteria and keep the mattress smelling fresh.

The cover is made from 99% polyester and 1% Elastane.

This material quickly responds to body temperature by wicking sweat away, allowing it to evaporate which keeps the mattress cool and comfortable.

CertiPUR-US Certification

CertiPUR-US is a not-for-profit organization that tests and certifies foams that are used to make a number of products, including mattresses.

It’s important to keep in mind that not all foams are created equally. Some are produced overseas where there’s often little to no oversight. These foams can make their way into the US and into the homes of unsuspecting consumers. They can contain harmful elements such as mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, ozone depleters, and high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Manufacturers can choose to participate in the CertiPUR-US program by having their foam tested to ensure that it does not contain any chemicals that are deemed unsafe.

The CertiPUR-US website offers a list of participating companies. I was able to locate Molecule as it was shown as currently being certified.

Firmness Options

Some mattress manufacturers offer multiple comfort levels while others only offer one.

Molecule sells their mattress in only one comfort level which is a medium firm. They describe as a 6.5 on a scale from 1-10.

For most sleepers, a medium firm mattress will be comfortable, although there are some that prefer a softer or firmer mattress. If you happen to fall on the far end of either spectrum, the Molecule may not be a good choice for you.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Molecule offers a limited lifetime warranty which exceeds the 10-year warranty that’s offered by the majority of mattress companies.

As with all other mattress warranties, there are limitations that should be considered.

The warranty is non-transferrable and covers material defects and issues with workmanship.

Molecule’s warranty covers sagging greater than 1″ as well as malfunctioning zippers and flaws in cover construction.

There are however limitations. The warranty does not include any of the following:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Unintended use
  • Minor cosmetic flaws
  • Burns, tears, stains, discoloration
  • Damage by children, rodents, or animals
  • Purchase from unauthorized seller

The terms of this warranty are similar to what nearly every mattress manufacturer offers. The length of the warranty is, however, exceptional.

Pricing & Shipping

Molecule is offered in six different sizes including twin, twin xl, full, queen, king, and California king.

The price that you pay will vary depending on which size you choose.

You should expect to pay between $899 and $1,399 for a Molecule mattress.

The good news is they offer free shipping. Molecule ships their mattresses using FedEx which has a transit time of one week or less.

Pricewise, I would consider this mattress to be average in comparison to similar foam mattresses.

Financing Options

Molecule is currently running a promotional offer where you are able to receive 0% APR financing for either 12 or 18 months, depending on which mattress you purchase.

Their financing is offered through Klarna credit and is subject to credit approval.

Even if your credit is not the best, you may still be able to finance your purchase through Klarna with an APR of 19.99%

The chart below shows the total cost as well as monthly payment if you decide to finance.

Free Trial

For most of us, buying a mattress online is uncharted territory. It can be difficult to spend such a large amount of money without ever laying on a mattress to try it out.

Online mattress companies know this which is why nearly all of them offer a free trial where you are able to try out a mattress in your home for a specified number of nights and return it if you are not satisfied.

Molecule offers a 100-night trial where you are able to try out their mattress to see if it’s a good fit.

Their risk-free trial allows you to receive a full refund if you are not satisfied with your mattress. Simply contact them and request a refund. They will arrange for a pickup and issue you a full refund.

Final Thoughts

Molecule has several great selling points which differentiate it from many of the others out there.

First, this 12″ mattress does sleep cool and is very comfortable. There are a number of foam mattresses out there that trap heat, causing you to overheat. The Molecule, however, is not one of them. It’s MolecularFlo and RecoveryFlo foam material really helps the mattress breathe. The sheets also seem to help keep you cool and dry throughout the night.

This mattress also performed well in the motion isolation test, which is important if you share your bed with a partner. Even the slightest movement can unknowingly keep you up at night. Molecule does have you covered here.

Molecule comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which is much longer than the standard 10-year warranty that’s offered by most mattress manufacturers. The terms of their warranty seem to be identical to most.

This mattress is offered with a 100-night trial, which allows you to receive a full refund if not satisfied.

Finally, Molecule is CertiPUR-US certified meaning that you can be assured that the mattress is safe and doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals.

Molecule is reasonably priced and has a lot to offer.

Not being an athlete, I can’t vouch for the performance-enhancing claim, although I can say that I did sleep well and woke up feeling refreshed each morning that I slept on it.

Overall, this is one mattress that I would highly recommend.

Muse Sleep Soft Foam Bed Review

The mattress-in-a-box industry has simplified the often dreaded task of mattress shopping by reducing the number of choices that consumers have to make while allowing them to avoid high-pressure salesmen.

But has the process of mattress shopping become overly-simplified?

Muse believes so.

Nearly all mattress-in-a-box companies are offering one mattress with one level of firmness, which is typically a “medium”. The logic is that since the majority of people prefer a medium mattress, most customers will be satisfied with this one-size-fits-most approach.

Why do so many online mattress companies offer only one firmness option? The primary reason has to do with the cost associated with storing inventory.

When a mattress company offers a choice of 3 levels of firmness, this means that they must produce and warehouse 6 different size mattresses in 3 different firmness levels or a total of 18 different mattresses! While offering only one firmness option helps out with manufacturer’s carrying cost, it does nothing to personalize the mattress to an individual’s needs.

Muse, on the other hand, is one of the only foam mattress companies that will allow you to choose your firmness level. To keep things simple, they created a tool which helps you to determine which level is right for you by answering a few simple questions.

Other features that make this mattress unique is a cooling foam and phase-changing mattress cover that’s both removable and washable.

While Muse answers several questions on their website, there are still a lot of questions that you may have. Is this mattress really comfortable? How cool does it sleep? Does it provide good support? How well does it isolate motion? Does it smell?

I recently had the opportunity to test the Muse and hope to help you answer these questions and many others.

Arrival, Unpacking & Assembly

My queen size soft Muse mattress shipped from Auburn, Indiana via FedEx ground and took two days to arrive. The shipping speed was a bit faster than the 5-7 days that was advertised on their website. Keep in mind that your ship time will vary depending upon proximity to their warehouse.

The package measured 43″ X 20″ X 19″ and weighed approximately 95 lbs, so moving it upstairs into our bedroom was a two-person job, as the package is a bit large and somewhat heavy for one person to carry. My wife and I found that it was much easier to carry the mattress after it was removed from the box.

Once upstairs and positioned on our wood slat bed frame, I was able to set the mattress up by myself.

The setup process was similar to all other press and roll mattresses that come in a box.

The box contained a small package with a plastic opening device along with an instructional booklet.

I began by finding the end of the shrink wrap film, unwrapped it and then laid the mattress out with the cold wire fabric facing up.

From there, I pierced and glided through the plastic cover to remove it. The mattress instantly decompressed and began to take shape.

Within a couple minutes, it had fully expanded. The Muse website suggests waiting 1-2 hours before use, but I waited until the next night before putting it to the test.

The overall setup process was very simple and took about 10 minutes from doorstep to completion.

The Smell Test

Some foam mattresses give off a smell when opened. This smell is caused by off-gassing which is the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.

If strong enough, VOCs can irritate the airway, cause headaches, and even nausea.

Off-gassing occurs with almost all manufactured products and usually becomes less noticeable over time. Everything from new furniture to new shoe will off-gas to some degree.

While it’s impossible to find a mattress that does not produce VOCs, a good place to start is by choosing a mattress that’s CertiPUR-US certified, which the Muse mattress is.

The smell of VOCs is most prevalent when a compressed mattress is first opened. The reason being is that most foam mattresses are produced and then immediately packaged up which does not allow time for the material to breathe.

After unpacking the Muse, I gave it the smell test which simply involves burying my face into the mattress. Surprisingly, the mattress did not give off any sort of smell.

It’s not uncommon for a boxed mattress to off-gas for at least a couple days. With the Muse, off-gassing was not at all an issue.

Heat Dissipation Test

Foam mattresses are not exactly known for having great heat dissipating qualities. In fact, foam mattresses have gotten a bad reputation for trapping heat which causes hot sleeping.

This reputation is quickly disappearing thanks to advancements in foam manufacturing technology.

Today, several foam mattress makers are using foam that’s infused with gel beads which helps with the regulation of body temperature.

While Muse incorporated a 2″ slab of temperature-regulating gel foam into the top of their mattress, they take it one step further by covering the mattress in a unique cold wire fabric.

The mattress cover is made from cold wire yarn which creates a phase-changing fabric that is cool to the touch and helps to regulate body temperature.

Some manufacturers use chemicals to treat their mattress covers in order to help with heat dissipation. Instead of using chemicals, Muse went with a cold wire yarn to create a polyethylene fabric that offers a similar cooling effect but without the chemicals.

When laying down on the Muse, I found that it does, in fact, have a soft, silky feel that’s cool to the touch.

Muse does offer a free swatch of their cool-to-the-touch cold wire yarn fabric. You can request one by visiting their website and clicking on “Request a Swatch” at the bottom.

When sleeping on this mattress, it remained cool throughout the night.

I, however, was interested to know exactly how well this mattress dissipates heat. In order to find out, I conducted a heat dissipation test to give you a more quantifiable answer.

In this test, I heated up a large rice bag in the microwave for two minutes and then placed it on top of the Muse where it rested for a total of 10 minutes. This brought the mattress up to around 107 degrees Fahrenheit.

I set up an infrared temperature gun with a stopwatch attached to measure temperature drop.

I removed the rice bag and started the stopwatch. After 2 minutes I calculated the total heat loss which came out to 20.7 degrees.

The chart below shows the rate at which the Muse mattress dissipated heat.

Time (Seconds)Temperature °F
0107.9°
10
102.2°
2098°
3095.3°
4093.5°
5092.3°

7090.5°
8089.6°
9089°
10088.1°
11087.8°
12087.2°

This mattress lost a lot of heat within the first 30 seconds – 12.6 degrees to be exact. This is an indication that the Muse does not hold heat very well, which is a good thing if you are a hot sleeper.

Firmness Test

The firmness of a mattress refers to how soft or hard the mattress feels. Does the mattress feel plush like a cloud or hard as a rock?

Some mattress makers will rate the firmness of their mattress on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the softest and 10 being the most firm.

For this review, I’m testing out the “soft” which is said to be a 5 on the firmness scale.

In order to compare the softness of this mattress to other foam mattresses that I’ve tried in the past, I conducted a sinkage test which is somewhat similar to an ILD test.

This simple test involves placing a concrete-filled bucket weighing 42 lbs on the surface of the mattress. The bucket has a ruler attached to the side which will be used to measure the indentation. A straightedge is placed across the bed and a reading is taken where the straightedge meets the ruler.

In this test, I measured a drop of 2.5″ which seems within range for a soft mattress.

After giving the mattress a feel and conducting the sinkage test, I personally would rate the soft mattress at around a 4. This mattress is very plush and has a nice soft feel that would work well for a side or even a back sleeper.

Body Support

While you may assume that a soft mattress does not provide any support, this is not necessarily true.

The top layer is most important when it comes to firmness and comfort. The base layer, however, is most important when it comes to body support.

A dense, high ILD foam at the base can mean the difference between a mattress that offers proper support and one that misaligns your body and leaves you feeling sore in the morning.

How well a mattress supports your body depends on factors such as your size, weight, and sleeping position.

The best way to determine if a mattress provides proper support is to lay on it and have another person observe the alignment of your spine. If your body folds into a V shape when laying down, the mattress does not provide enough support.

I’m 6’1″ and 215 and felt as if this mattress worked well to support my body as I slept. My wife watched as I laid down in both the side and back sleeping positions. She noted that my sleeping posture was good.

Keep in mind that your results may vary depending on your body type. If you are larger in size, it may be a good idea to choose the medium or firm Muse as either will be a bit firmer and may offer more support.

Recovery Time

Once compressed, it takes time for foam to bounce back. The amount of time that a mattress takes to return to its original shape is referred to as recovery time. This could take anywhere from a few milliseconds to several seconds.

While slower responding memory foams are useful in some applications, mattresses do not happen to be one of them.

Most people prefer a mattress that responds quickly and doesn’t leave you feeling trapped and unable to move. Slow responding foam can leave you feeling stuck inside of the mattress. This can be especially disruptive for more active sleepers who frequently toss and turn throughout the night.

Although the Muse mattress is very soft and comfortable, I found that it was easy to maneuver around on it. The bed definitely didn’t give me a feeling of being “stuck”.

When I pushed down on the mattress, it responded very quickly although the top layer had a response time that was a bit slower than the bottom two layers.  You can see how quickly this mattress responds in the video above.

Motion Isolation

Choosing a bed with good motion isolation is essential if you plan on sleeping with a partner. It only takes a small amount of movement by your partner to disrupt your sleep which can leave you feeling tired throughout the day.

Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress prevents the transfer of motion. In other words, will you feel the mattress move when your partner rolls over or gets up in the middle of the night?

Some mattresses are more effective than others when it comes to motion isolation. Innerspring mattresses provide the least amount of protection against motion transfer while foam mattresses generally do very well with motion isolation.

While I have no complaints concerning motion transfer with the Muse, I did perform a test to demonstrate how this mattress handles motion.

In this test, I placed a wine glass that was half filled with water on one side of the mattress. I also used a vibration app to measure the amount of movement that occurred in the same area.

On the opposite side of the bed, I dropped a 14 lb weight from a distance of 12″ in order to simulate a partner moving on the bed.

The weight was dropped three times as I recorded the movement of the glass, which can be seen in the video above.

The vibration meter results showed a max reading of 5.6 MMI and a mean reading of 2.4 MMI.

As you can see, the Muse Mattress performed very well in the motion isolation test. This was expected as it is an all foam mattress.

Edge Support

When laying near the edge of the bed, do you feel as if you may roll off the edge? How well does it support your bottom when sitting on the edge? The edge support of a mattress matters and can make a difference when it comes to using the entire surface area of the mattress.

Foam mattresses are generally inferior when it comes to edge support. How well a mattress holds up towards the edge will depend greatly on the type and density of foam that is used.

I noticed that while sitting on the Muse mattress, it doesn’t offer very much edge support and will sink down.

However, when laying close to the edge of the mattress, where my weight was more evenly distributed, I did not experience the feeling of being ejected from the bed. I was able to lay close to the edge of the bed without any issues.

While this may not be the best mattress for sitting on to tie your shoes, you shouldn’t experience any issues when laying close to the edge.

The Company

ViscoSoft is the parent company behind the Muse mattress. The company was formed in 2007 and began by selling sheets, pillows, mattress protectors and mattress toppers before expanding into the mattress-in-a-box industry in 2016.

ViscoSoft is based in Charlotte, NC and was founded by three gentlemen – Gabriel Dungan, Rick Wo, and Matthieu Witkowski. The trio operate a global business with the goal to deliver quality sleep products around the world. They currently have offices in the US, China, and France.

Gabriel Dungan is the president and founder of ViscoSoft. He began his career by working in international trade in Hong Kong before moving to France but eventually made his way back home to North Carolina to form ViscoSoft.

Aside from the Muse mattress, Dungan and his team are currently working on a smart mattress project which they call “Matrix”. The mattress is the first to track sleep cycles, breathing, heart rate and movement.

Mattress Construction

The Muse mattress boasts an incredible 12″ thick profile, which is 2″ thicker than most foam mattresses that are out there.

Like most foam mattresses, this one features three layers of foam, each with its own unique purpose.

First, let’s talk about foam density which you will often hear manufacturers refer to when talking about their mattress.

Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot. This is simply the weight of one cubic ft of a particular foam. In general, higher density foams are heavier while lower density foams are lighter.

Starting at the bottom, the Muse features an 8″ thick slab of 2lb VPF foam which is used as a base layer for the middle and top layer to rest on top. This layer provides support and prevents your body from sinking too far into the mattress.

The middle layer of foam will vary in density depending on which mattress that you choose. For instance, if you go with the medium firmness mattress, the middle layer may have a density of 4lbs while a softer mattress will contain a lower density foam at the middle and a firmer mattress will contain a higher density of foam.

The top layer of foam is 2″ in thickness and features temperature-regulating gel foam with a density of 3.5lbs. Since memory foam has a tendency to retain heat, Muse infuses this layer of foam with gel beads which help to transfer heat away from the mattress to keep your body cool.

To top things off, this mattress is covered with a cold wire cover. This cover is made from cold wire yarn which is used to create a phase changing material to help keep your body cool throughout the night. It can be unzipped, removed and laundered.

All three firmness mattresses are identical in construction with the exception of the middle layer which is swapped out depending on which firmness option you choose.

CertiPUR-US Certified

Muse is made in the United States in Auburn, Indiana from foam that is CeritPUR-US certified.

You may have heard the term “CertiPur Certified” but what exactly does this mean?

In 2008, the CertiPur-US certification program was created in response to foams that were entering the United States and contained potentially harmful chemicals.

This certification program is administered by a not-for-profit organization who test foams for compliance.

CertiPUR-US certified foams are tested for:

  • Ozone Depleters
  • Flame retardants that contain TCEP, TDCPP or PBDE
  • Mercury, lead or other heavy metals
  • Formaldehyde
  • Regulated phthalates
  • Volatile Organic Compounds, which must test at less than 0.5 PPM.

In order to display the CertiPur-US badge, the foams used to produce the mattress must fall within the strict guidelines which are set by the organization.

Taking a quick look at the Certipur website, it shows the Muse Sleep as being a participating company.

Firmness Option

One unique feature that Muse is proud of is the fact that you can order one in the firmness level that you desire. This option is uncommon in the boxed mattress industry.

Muse offers three different comfort levels including a soft, medium and a frim. On a scale of 1-10, they show the soft as being a 5, the medium is a 6.5 and the firm is an 8.

If you are unsure of which firmness to choose, Muse has you covered.

To help make this decision easier, they created a 6 step sleep personality quiz which asks you a series of questions about your body type, sleeping position, bed sharing, sleeping temperature, etc.

An algorithm is then used to help you determined exactly which mattress is a good fit for you. It takes less than a minute and you will know exactly which mattress to choose.

Cleaning & Care

Another nice feature that the Muse has to offer is the fact that you are able to remove and wash the mattress cover.

Simply unzip the cover and wash it in cold water using the gentle cycle. Be sure to tumble dry on low. Do not iron or dry clean.

Muse suggests using an enzyme-based cleaner to spot clean the foam or cover. To deodorize, you can also sprinkle baking soda on the area and allow it to sit before vacuuming.

Persistent stains and odors should be removed by a professional who specializes in cleaning mattresses.

In order to avoid staining the mattress, a mattress protector should be used which Muse also sells.

To ensure even wear, be sure to rotate the mattress 180 degrees every six months. The Muse mattress is not designed to be flipped over.

Warranty

Muse offers a 10-year limited warranty that is similar to other manufacturers’ warranties. This warranty covers items such as unraveling of stitching due to manufacturing defect and sags that are greater than 3/4″.

Interestingly enough, their warranty covers indentations greater than 3/4″. Most mattress manufacturers set this threshold for normal sagging to greater than 1.5″.

Setting the limit so low is an indication that they are likely using foam that durable and will not easily compress and wear out prematurely.

The limitations on this warranty are fairly standard and exclude items such as:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Abuse
  • Improperly supported bed
  • Improper use
  • Mold/mildew
  • Smoke, fire, act of god

With the exception of a lower sagging limit, there’s nothing unusual or exceptional about this warranty.

Pricing & Shipping Costs

The price of the Muse is the same, regardless of which comfort level you choose. There is, however, a variation in price based on the size that you choose.

Thier mattresses start at $650 for the twin and go up to $1,100 for the California King. They do offer free shipping on all orders.

Compared to other foam mattresses that are available, this one is average in price.

Trial Period

Most mattresses these days come with some sort of trial period where you are able to test it out and may return it free of charge if you are not satisfied.

A trial period is essential when it comes to buying a mattress online because you do not have the opportunity to get a feel for it prior to purchasing it. Nearly all online retailers realize this and therefore offer a trial period.

While some retailers offer a trial period of only 30 days, there are others who will accept returns up to a year later.

Muse offers a 120-night trial period which is more than generous. Most people will be able to determine if the mattress is a good fit within the first few weeks of sleeping on it.

If you decide that the Muse is not a good fit, you can request a refund. Instead of stuffing the mattress back in the box (which is impossible) they will ask you to donate it to a local charity and then will issue a refund.

They do however ask that you sleep on the Muse for 1-2 weeks in order to get a feel for it and break it in.

Final Thoughts

If you are considering a mattress-in-a-box, there are literally dozens of products to choose from. Unfortunately, many of these mattresses are nearly identical when it comes to construction and features.

Muse does an excellent job separating itself from the crowd by offering a 12″ thick foam mattress with a unique combination of cooling gel foam and a washable cold wire cover which helps to keep you cool and dry at night.

Also, offering three firmness options is a differentiating feature that is often not found with most foam mattresses. The majority come in a medium firmness which works well for most people but not all.  Muse gives you two additional choices.

Overall the Muse mattress performed well in all tests that I put it through and is reasonably priced.
